March 2011 Moms

Grant has arrived :) I'm so in love...(birth story)

So I woke up Sat Apr 2 with a lot of mucous, didn't think anything of it b/c I know you sometimes pass your plug weeks, days, or whatever before you're about to deliver.  Well in my case, it was hours :)  Anyway, starting having period/constipation like mild cramps that am around 9.  They kept happening all day but were not painful.  I took a shower, finished packing my hospital bag (bc I was scheduled to be induced today anyway) and then was lazy all day.  I laid down on my left side on my bed and watched "Eat, Pray, Love."  I really wanted to wait till today so I could have my doctor, but G had other plans.  So anyway, I started thinking around 2 pm that things might be more than just cramps and told my DH that he might want to take a shower, pack his bag, and that he might not get to play in his hockey game that night.  We were planning to go to my dad's that night for dinner and to Skype with my brother who's stationed in Iraq and I haven't really talked/seen him since I was pregnant so I really still wanted to go over even though I wasn't feeling th best.

We left around 5 pm, went over and I laid on the couch the whole time and kept feeling like I had to go to the bathroom.  I video skyped with my brother joking around saying that I think I was in labor etc but again, still wasn't sure.  Around 7pm things started getting really uncomfortable...so I began timing my "pains" about 7:30ish.  My husband came back from his hockey game at 8, I said, "you need to eat and we're leaving, I think I'm in labor."

So we get home at 8:45 pm, I call the doc and they tell me to "think about going into the hospital."  I decided at 9:30 that we should go.  By the time I got to the hosp, I was 3-4 cm and 90%.  We were in triage from 10-11 and I was IN PAIN, contractions were 4 mins apart.  Got into a labor room at 11ish, I asked for the epi and nurse said no problem, shouldn't take too long to get it. Yeah, well, I didn't end up getting it until 1:30 am!  Doc came in before the epi, asked if I wanted it this early and I said yes only then did she check me and she said, wow, you're dialted 5 plus right now and I'm being conservative, go ahead and get that epi!  So I did, at 1:30 finally, went from 5-9 cm in 2 hours!  Was waiting for the resident and doc, and finally starting pushing at 5 am.  Everyone was so surprised at how quick I was moving along...I pushed for just shy of 2 hours and Grant was born at 6:48 am yesterday.  He is 6lbs 3 oz and 19 1/2 inches long.  Doctor was amazed b/c he was face up and most women end up with a C section in that situation b/c it's so hard to get them to come out, but I was determined!  It was hard but soooo worth it.  I'm so in love and elated.  So glad to join all of you on this amazing journey.

Congrats to all us of new mommies!

  • Congrats!  You're lucky your labor wasn't that long considering he was posterior (face up).  Usually, labor goes longer when they are in that position.  Mine was 25 hours with a posterior baby.

  • No, I did not know that he was posterior going into labor and in hindsight, I'm glad I didn't!  They tried to feel and see what way he was facing but they couldn't tell.
