Babies: 6 - 9 Months

solids: feeling guilty, must confess, and ?s

okay so I haven't been feeding DS very much baby food the past few weeks.  He's just not interested in it most of the time and I don't know how to get him to eat it.  Since I can't just hand it over to the hubby, I get frustrated, sign "all done", and clean everything up.  Some days he doesn't get baby food at all, just bottles.  Is this bad for his health?  I'm not worried about it stunting his growth (he's in 12-18mo clothes), but I do wonder if I'm making a huge misstep here.  he's about 7 1/2 months, do I need to be giving him baby food like twice a day?  three times a day?

  • Charlotte is not interested in purees at all. She eats MAYBE 3 spoonfuls and that isn't even an everyday thing. She is in the 90% percentile for height/weight, so it hasn't concerned me too much. I am going to get a mesh baby feeder and put some fruit in there. I also am going to try doing some finger foods. Some babies just don't like purees, I guess. Have you tried doing any sort of finger foods? ie - really small pieces of bananas, steamed carrots, etc.

  • Did your pediatrician give you any guidelines as to what you he should be eating by now?

Here is a sample for 6-9 months that was given to me by my pediatrician

Breakfast:     1/2 cup cereal, 2-4 oz fruit

Lunch:          1/2 cup cereal, 2-4oz vegetable

Dinner:          2oz. meat, 2-4oz. vegetable and 2-4oz. fruit

Jake certainly doesn't eat this much, I wouldn't worry about stunting his growth, but can you talk to your ped. to see why he isn't eating? Maybe mix the fruit and cereal?

  • Maybe he would do better with the BLW approach? Wholesomebabyfood.com has some good information on it

  • I went through the exact same thing with Natalie. She was not interested at ALL. I was so frustrated and I hated feeding her. Last week I tried giving her some puffs on her tray and she picked them up and put them in her mouth. It was a complete surprise to me. I ended up steaming some veggies and cutting them up and trying them for her next meal and after a few meals she is actually eating! She's not perfect at it yet, but she knows what she's supposed to do. She'll pick up the food and put it in her mouth and chew. It gives me a break, too. Even if they don't eat a whole lot, it's not that big of a deal, because they're still getting a big bottle, you know? I think she was just bored with purees.

  • My LO doesn't like purees either.  I make sure to offer it, but he is more interested in chewing on the spoon.  He prefers finger foods - puffs, mum mums, crusty bread whole wheat bread, and fruit and veggies in a mesh feeder.  Since its all for "practice"at this point and eventually he will need to feed himself anyway - I figure its not the end of the world that he won't let me feed him purees.  You might also want to attempt baby-led weaning.  Some other moms on here seem to have had more success introducing solids that way.

  • We only do two meals a day, and he gets 4 bottles.

Logan doesn't really like the purees, and he HATES being fed; he wants to do it himself.

Maybe try just giving him some soft finger foods (french toast, little pieces of steamed veggies, etc); we have way more success this way.

It's true that it becomes messy, but SOME does get into his mouth and he loves having control over it.

Another thing we do (on a Bumpie suggestion) is give him his own spoon to hold, which distracts him, then I get the food in while he's distracted.

GL! I'm sure it will be fine!

    Charlotte is SOOO cute!
  • Have you tried finger foods? Maybe that will help.

At this stage, most nutrition comes from bm/formula, so I think it's okay if your LO doesn't always eat solids. Gavin goes through phases where he doesn't want to eat much at all, but still takes in plenty of breastmilk. Keep offering foods, hope your LO takes to them soon.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. We didn't get consistent with solids until about his age, and we skipped purees. Maybe look into BLW. You just offer food when you're having meals and let baby self feed. It's much easier than trying to force purees into a baby who doesn't want to eat them.

  • My son is hit or miss w/ solids. I hate feeding him because half the time I have to throw away the food. I have found its better to feed him before a bottle and it doesn't affect how much formula he takes in at all. He is not ready for finger foods. He throws up or gags from them. He is 90th % for weight and 70th for height.

For real?  DS eats one tb cereal plus one oz fruit or veg per meal.

Really! She gave me a booklet...He eats LESS than half that, I hope I'm not stunting his growth either.

Yeah...that seems like a lot of food.  DS gets two meals about 3 oz. of fruit with oatmeal mixed in in the morning.  For dinner he gets two veggies (sweet potatoes and peas this week) totaling about 4-5oz.  He still nurses on demand and eats 3-4 4-5 oz. BM bottles while I'm at work.

  • Milk is still the baby's main source of nutrition for the first year...the baby food is just for practice, not for actual nutrition.  It's fine if he's not getting baby food consistently.  Maybe he just needs more time.  DD rejected purees until just recently...we tried for months to get her to eat it and she wouldn't.  Keep trying, but it's okay if he's not eating as much baby food.

That is an INSANE amount of food for a baby!
