2nd Trimester

Glucose Tolerance Test

I am going tomorrow. I plan to go at 4pm, but my friend just told me its better to go in the morning because theres a higher chance of testing positive later in the day? Anyone heard anything about this?

Also, my doctor told me I did not have to fast, but she said to fast 4 hours before the test. I have been researching online and have seen different things.

Help!?

Re: Glucose Tolerance Test

  • I was told to fast before going when I took it last time so I took it early in the am around 8pm and didnt eat after 8pm the night before.. I didnt want to risk anything tainting the test.

I'd just get it done early to get it over with anyway..it isnt that bad..the drinks arent that bad either but the place I went to was PACKED with people so I had to wait forever before I could even take the test..because you cant set up an appt for the glucose test at the place I go to.

  • Thanks!! I forgot to mention that I REALLY dont want to take off work and the earliest I can get there is 4pm without taking off.

Its going to be very difficult to fast during the day for me though, since I teach elementary school and need all of the energy I can get! UGH!?

They didnt give you an option when to take it? Mine just told me take it sometime during week X.. Same with BW so I could pick a day I didnt work or have plans..

Fasting will be hard with keeping up with kids! Plus I'm always hungrier at work for some reason :)

  • I was told I didn't have to fast or anything different before my test. I had not heard anything about time of day changing the results. Can you call your dr and ask about the time of day thing?

  • For the 1 hour you shouldn't have to fast. Nothing you eat unless its really sugary will effect the testing. The time of day shouldn't matter either.  The 3 hour you have to fast, but you only get that if you fail the 1 hour.

  • My OB specifically told me not to fast.  My appointment is at 3:30 in the afternoon.

  • I called the doctor's office to ask, and the secretary was the one who told me I didn't have to fast. I didnt speak to the doctor herself.... but I think I will try to call again.

They told me to go for my test on Wed or Thurs, because I also have to get blood drawn being RH negative blood type. (I need to return to the doctor on Monday for Rogam).

    Thanks for your help!?

This. I even called and asked a nurse again yesterday because I heard so many people say they were told to fast. The nurse reiterated that they do NOT want me to fast, but just don't drink or eat a bunch of sugary stuff for the several hours before the test. My test is on Thursday.

  • It doesn't matter what time of day or if you eat or not. If you have GD it will show up. Beside the one hour test is just a pre test to see if you even need to really be tested. Many who fail the one hour go on to pass the three hour. Listen to your doctor they are the ones that know what they are doing not your friend.
