Toddlers: 24 Months+

Repost: from 12-24...ready for a big girl bed?

The last 3 nights she has been waking up wanting to sleep in my bed.  Last night when I put her down she usually just goes right to sleep.  Well she didn't she cried for me until I went in there and we laid down on the floor next to her crib she past right out with in minutes and then dh picked her up and put her in the crib.

is that a sign that she is ready for a big girl bed?

What are your thoughts?

  • No, nothing about that makes me think she is "ready."  In fact, I think that if switching now would only make things tougher - I am all for keeping little bitties contained in a secure crib as long as possible.  I think that falling asleep on the floor with her is only going to increase this new behavior.  It seems you are just at a time when you need to stick with the bedtime routine and "rules," help her through this rough few days, and get to the other side.  I am really not a sleep nazi and quite compassionate to little people, but she is going to learn fast that she can dictate where you all sleep if you let her.  Comfort her but stand your ground.  I think creating an environment where she can get out and roam by herself in the midst of some sleeping disturbances is really not the best plan.  GL

  • hmmm I guess I didn't think of it that way.  I left her cry it out at like 2:30 this morning because she was asking for me again and eventually she fell back to sleep.  Maybe you are right, that this isn't an indication of her being "ready".  Thanks for the input! :)

  • I don't know that it means she's ready.  But I thought I'd mention that, we moved DD to a toddler bed at 18 months b/c I have joint problems and couldn't lift her from the crib anymore (she's a big kid)....she did wonderfully!  GL!

  • These do not read as signs that she is ready, at least to me.  Kind of the opposite, like she is having separation anxiety at bedtime.  Putting her in a big girl bed might just be opening the door to more troublesome sleep times.

Hard to know when it is right.  I switched DS1 when he was 2.5 years and it took 6 months of putting him back to bed, finding him asleep on the floor in the hallway, etc. before he really got comfortable about sleeping in a regular bed.

I switched DS2 when he was 2 years and it took a week or so to get him comfortable and settled.  I switched him because he would point to and climb in the bunkbed that was in his room at bedtime rather than going to his crib.  That was my sign that he was 'ready'.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Not sure what the "signs" are unless they are crawling out of the crib. We moved DD right before 18 months and she had no problems at all.
