At my 34 week appointment yesterday my tummy was measuring at a 38. My doc has ordered another ultrasound in 3 weeks to see just how big my little guy is. My question is to those that were measuring big with their first - what happened? Did your doc schedule you for a c-section early, did you go on your own early or something else happen?
I'm just trying to figure out what this could possibly mean. Thanks!
Re: 2nd Time Moms that were measuring big
If you are still measuring big at 37 weeks and baby seems to be on the big side, they may try to convince you to be induced at 39 weeks for baby's size. I would advise you not to do it.
With my first baby, I was measuring small/on time for my whole pregnancy. At my ultrasound at 37 weeks, they estimated DS's birth weight to be 7lbs. My DS was 10lbs. With my DD, I was measuring 2-3 weeks ahead most of the time. By the ultrasound at 37 weeks, they estimated her to be over 9lbs at birth. She was 7lbs 14oz.
Ultrasounds late in pregnancy can be off by 2lbs in either direction and fundal height is notoriously inaccurate because baby's position/fluid levels can make you measure smaller/larger.
I measured big with dd the entire pregnancy. I had a growth ultrasound at 39w6d and she was estimated at 11lbs. We scheduled a c-section for that Monday but I went into labor on Saturday on my own. DD was 10lbs 4 oz and 21 1/2 inches long.
This pregnancy I have been measuring big all along. I was hoping to try for a vbac but the Doctor doesn't want to attempt it if this baby is over 8 1/2 lbs. I have a growth ultrasound today to check the status...Hopefully it isn't another giant baby

with ds i would measure about a week ahead every time, never too big but they ordered a growth u/s at 37w 4d and baby measured 7p 6o. i had ds at 39s 5d and he was 8p 2o and 22 inches. they thought he would be high 8s so it was pretty accurate.
i think the growth u/s are more accurate now a days but it all depends how good the tech is. it just gives them an idea if the baby is going to be really big or not. personally i liked knowing that the baby was bigger, it put me at ease knowing he was growing well.
this time around my belly is measuring a week behind but my belly pictures look the same in size to me. i think it all depends how the baby is laying in your belly and with subsequent children they say you don't drop as early on.
I measured big the whole time with DS. They did a growth u/s at 36 weeks (I think) and DS was measuring on the large size of average, but nothing too crazy. The OBs just discussed my options, as far as scheduling a c-section if I wanted to, but never pushed the issue and let me make up my mind. They gave me both sides to consider and I decided to try for a vaginal birth (was never really a debate at all in my mind) and I was able to birth him.
Also, my OBs will not induce based on suspected large size alone, and to my knowledge most won't The growth u/s can be way off and research has shown no proven benefit to inducing early based on size alone (ie reduction in c-section rate). There must be a medical necessity to induce, or they wait until 42 weeks. Some docs are different but this was my office's policy.
I never measured big with DS, although he was considered large for gestational age at 8lbs 6oz at 39w.
I was always right on track with DS, but I have been measuring 4 weeks ahead with this pregnancy since 23w by fundal height. I had an ultrasound at 30w and baby was estimated right at 45% (3lbs 4oz). I'll be having another ultrasound at 36w to check growth again.
I do not want to schedule a c-section or an induction for a possible big baby. Ultrasound measurements can be notoriously off.

I'm still measuring on with #2, but with DS I started measuring big I *think* right around 34 weeks. By the time I was 39 weeks I was measuring 42-43 weeks. DS was estimated to be 9 lbs. 6 oz. at 38.5 weeks. He was born at 39 weeks even weighing 9 lbs. 10 oz.
I was a scheduled c/s due to size/dystocia concerns. My water broke that morning anyway. My c/s time was just pushed up.
With DS he was estimated to be around 8.5 lbs. I went into labor on my own at 38 wks, 6 days and ended up with a c-section because I never dialated passed 6 cm and he got stuck in my cervix which caused a lot of swelling. He was 9 lbs, 8 oz and 22 in long.
This time I'm measuring big as well. At my last growth u/s last week at 35 weeks she was measuring 7 lbs, 1 oz which is the 88th percentile. My repeat c/s is scheduled for 39 weeks. However, if I do go into labor before then, depending on my progression I may opt to try for a VBAC.
I measured a week ahead throughout my last trimester (which I only found out when I asked how this baby compared to my first). While they warned me that baby was going to be big, we didn't do anything differently because of that.
I went late, too -- 41 weeks exactly. DS was 8lbs 9oz.
