Slings/Wraps

What have you used or what did you purchase?

I would like one of the ring slings that has extra I can drape over me and baby for bfing.  But I also want one that will last as baby grows.

I had a Moby on my registry, but the more I look at it, the less I like it.  And it definitly doesn't have the extra fabric like I want to cover with.

I was thinking of making my own ring sling, but I know so much has been said about slings being unsafe.  I don't know if something I make would be safe enough for baby.

TIA

Re: Slings/Wraps

  • I think you make your own ring sling safely.  Just make sure it doesn't have tons of excess fabric that will cover the baby's face, and make sure your stitching is really strong where you sew the rings in.  You can buy rings that have been tested to hold up to 250 lbs.  I used this site when I made a ring sling:

I'm planning to buy a Moby or Sleepy wrap but I don't have any experience with them yet.  You might like a carrier that is stretchy like a wrap but doesn't actually require wrapping, like a K'tan.  The downside of these is that they are size specific, so you and your husband can't trade off.

For nursing, I just used a scarf or jacket to help me be discreet so you could do that.

  • The moby is nothing but extra fabric. You can bf in it (once you get good at bfing) and no one will know.

For now, I have a homemade moby-like wrap, and ergo (only good once he gets a bit bigger), and a cheap seven sling.

diaperswappers has a bustling trade in used carriers of all types. I kind of want a mei tai, but I'm trying to convince myself to wait and see what's useful.

I was thinking of using the Sling Me, Mommy pattern that's linked to on slingrings.com.  Maybe I'll do that and then save some money to make or purchase something for when the baby gets bigger.

  • I had a Peanut Shell and a Hotsling for DS (both gifts) and he hated both.  So did I.

When he got bigger, we used a Bjorn and he loved to face outward on walks.

This time around, I am considering the Baby K'Tan for the newborn phase but am going to hold off and see if I really need it before buying.  Every baby is different and you never know what they are going to like/dislike.

  • I have a Peanut Shell sling, a Baby Hawk and an Ergo.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Moby too.  I think the style of the Moby is perfect for covering you up while BFing.

After some research and chatting with a few moms that have a Moby (they all said to skip it- too much fabric, it's hard to put on, and it's hot) . I decided to go with the Baby K'Tan. It's super easy to put on, doesn't have a ton of excess fabric and is light weight.

I didn't use a sling with DS but I don't really want to haul a double stroller around, so I opted to stick with my single stroller for DS and sling the baby.  Who knows if my plan will be one that works :)

  • I got advice from a mother of a two year old that had 4, count them 4 types of slings/carriers.

     Favorite: Beco Butterfly 2

Least favorite: Slingring - She said she felt it made her look big and frumpy and she did not feel good about herself.

I have bought the Beco knowing I can use it for the next two years. (newborn to 45 lbs)

     Just one opinion though!

  • I have a Moby, an Ergo, and 3 woven wraps. The wovens are the most versatile wraps. They last all the way through toddlerhood. They have a harder learning curve than other types of wraps though.

I have a few links for you to check out. I saw pp said that diaper swappers has a forum for wraps and that's true but I think TheBabyWearer's FSOT is much better because that's their specialty. You have to have an account, but it's the same for DSwappers. They also have tons of info about the different types. Also there is a bumpie who has an awesome blog when it comes to wrapping. Here is a link to her baby wearing guide.

Good luck finding what you are looking for. :D

ETA: I also meant to tell you, go to youtube and just type in hands free nursing.

  • I'm a Moby-wearer.

I got this Petunia Pickle Bottom one...I haven't used it yet (except withthe doll in the store) but it is super comfortable and very easy to figure out.  Personally I wasn't a fan of the excess material on the other type of wraps.  I am planning on just buying a seperate breastfeeding canopy thing and using that.

  • We registered for a Sleepy wrap. We were shown it at the store and DH said he would be willing to use it which is what I wanted. Since it's a Mat baby we asked for a lighter coloured wrap. I'm looking forward to using it!
