Stupid ? about shopping with LO

This is a stupid question but I'd rather ask it here than look like an idiot when I take LO to the store for the first time...

For those of you who have gone to the grocery store, Target, etc. with your LO, where do you put their carseat/carrier? I'm assuming it's too big to fit in the top part of the cart, so do you have to put it in the main part? If so, where do you put the stuff you're buying?

I know I've seen plenty of people shopping with babies before I had my LO, but I guess I never really paid attention...

Re: Stupid ? about shopping with LO

  • From what I have experienced - Walmart carts are designed to fit carseats exactly.  My Graco Snugride clips right in.  When I went to Target, not so lucky.  I put the carseat in the lower half, I didn't have anything big to buy anyway.  I wish all places had carts that fit carseats exactly.  It would make life super easy.

Those are the only two places I have shopped so far.  If I go somewhere without carts someday, like the mall, I will take the stroller - I have a travel system.

  • Our carseat clipped onto the top part fine. We had to run by the mall a couple days ago and just used his stroller.

  • It really depends what type of carseat you have. We have the Chicco Keyfit30 and it is not designed to snap onto shopping carts (its a safety issue to have them up there) so we have to put the car seat into the shopping cart, I squeeze my diaper bag to the rear of it and place items I purchase either on the sides or on the bottom of the cart. If MH is with us when we go, we take the stroller and push a separate cart. I honestly cringe every time that I see a car seat on top of a shopping cart.

  • yup, i think it depends on your car seat... I have the Graco snugfit, and couldn't get it to "latch" on the top part of the shopping cart at Target so I just stuck the car seat in the lower half... at Walmart the car seat seemed to latch on.. kind of... but honestly i didn't feel DD was 100% safe up there, plus I couldn't really see over the car seat so I was afraid of running into things so I just ended up moving the car seat to the bottom portion :)

  • How is it a safety issue to have them up there?  They are made to withstand a car wreck!!!  Not that I want to go tipping over my cart to see what would happen... but I am sure the force would pail in comparison to a car accident.  I only feel safe when it actually clicks into the shopping cart just like it clicks into the base.  Obviously it is dangerous if it is sliding around up there.

  • I have the Graco Snugride and it snaps perfectly onto the Walmart and Kroger carts.

  • Im a chicken about shopping with LO by myself, unless I am only getting one item or going to the mall. If thats the case then I use my stoller and have LO "hold" what I am going to buy. If I need to go grocery shopping I leave LO at home with DH or call a babysitter.
  • I dont get how it isnt safe either. The few times I have been shopping the car seat fit perfectly on the cart. It wasnt going anywhere! I saw Mom's do this all the time prior to having DD.
  • One of my co-workers told me that she had heard it wasn't safe... we discussed this issue amongst my co-workers... after all everyone does it... But as we often settle things at my work someone googled the issue... We came across a few articles of people who thought it was safe, you do after all assume the car seat "latches" into place, but had the car seat fall off of the shopping cart... It's like anything... It CAN be dangerous... I mean the simple act of getting in a car and driving to the store is dangerous... As I stated above, I tried it at Wal-Mart, but I couldn't properly see over the carseat so I didn't feel it was safe... If you feel comfortable with it more power to you, i know it would make my shopping experience much more comfortable as I could actually fit stuff in the shopping cart

  • I wear LO in the Moby wrap when we go to the store.  Then I don't have to worry about the car seat at all.

I'm still waiting to apply this topic to my life, but this was my thought.... carry him in a sling/moby and avoid the carseat altogether.

this. i see people with car seats that aren't designed to fit on top with them up there all the time. I have the safety first onboard air 35 and i put it in the cart.
