How long were you in the hospital after your CS?

With DD#1, I had her at 8am on a Friday and didn't leave the hospital until Monday around Noon. So, I was there a full 3.5 days. The doctor had told me he could send me home on Sunday but I was practically in tears telling him I didn't want to leave. I didn't have any complications but I was still in a lot of pain on Sunday and I wasn't ready to go. However, with that delivery, I had been in labor all night on Thurs, I had done over an hour of pushing, it was an emergency CS, and it took 3 people to wrangle DD out because her head was stuck in my pelvis. So, I'm thinking that maybe there was more physical trauma during that CS which made the recovery longer.

With DD#2, it will be a scheduled CS so I'm hoping that it will be less physically difficult. Anyway, I'm just curious to know how long you were in the hospital after the CS.

  • I had an emergency section after 30 hours of labor with DD #1.  I had her Wednesday night and went home on Sunday.  Like you, I was in a lot of pain the day before I went home and although the doc offered to discharge me on Sat she told me I could stay till Sunday, so I took her up on the offer. With DD #2 I VBACd and went home after two nights, though I really could have gone home after one.  DH and I just wanted to get a bit more time with DD #2 before the craziness of a toddler and infant became a reality.

  • I had an unplanned c-section after 42 hours of labor on Tuesday night and went home on Friday afternoon. I had a very easy recovery, though, and had very little pain. They offered to release me on Thursday but I said no--I wanted the extra night.

  • 4 nights.  By choice.  My OB was more than willing to release me after 3 nights but I let her know under no uncertain circumstances that I planned to chain myself to the hospital bed if she didn't let me stay another night ;)

  • I had my cs on Sunday evening and was discharged on Thursday but that was because of DDs bad jaundice. They were more than willing to let me leave earlier but insurance let me stay with DD.

Have you gotten one of the psot-maternity support bands? Seriously, it helped me so much post-CS with moving around.

  • unplanned c-s monday evening, discharged Thursday afternoon.  I really did not want to leave yet!
  • My CS was on a Wed night after laboring all day, we were discharged Sun morning.  We could have left on Sat, but LO had high jaundice levels, so we stayed so she could be monitored.

Yes, I did get one of those about 4 weeks post partum and I wish I had gotten it earlier. Thanks for reminding me about it because I'm going to dig it up and bring it to the hospital. I remember it was especially helpful for riding in the car because it made me feel like it was holding everything together.

  • Okay, sounds like the norm is 3-4 days so I'll plan for that. I don't know how much of a choice I'll have with scheduling but I'm hoping not to do have it on a Tues or Wed because then when I get home from the hospital DD#1 will be out of daycare for the weekend. Ideally I'd love to come home from the hospital and still have 1-2 days that are a weekday so I can put DD#1 in daycare.

  • the post-partum band really helped me get up and down so much easier. I imagine that having a toddler at home that you might be moving around more :-)

This is a great idea.  I had DD #2 on a Tuesday and we came home on Thursday.  DD #1 went to DC on Thursday and Friday.  I convinced my in-laws to stay until Sunday (they came in on Tuesday and stayed with DD #1 while we were in the hospital).  It was perfect because we had help all weekend and just had Sunday afternoon/evening to contend with before DD and DH went to DC and work on Monday.  By the time the weekend rolled around again, we were in really good shape.

  • i didn't have one but my understanding is that insurance companies will authorize 3 nights up front - but it can be extended by your physician if medically necessary.

and that 3 nights start the day you deliver - so if you go in monday morning, you obviously get a bit more recovery time in the hospital than you would going in monday night.

  • I had mine on a Saturday night and was released on a Tuesday morning.  My water broke and I immediately went to the hospital telling them to give me a CS because they projected DS to be a large baby...
  • 3 days with Maggie who was the emergency CS.  I was still in a ton of pain but they sent me home with some pretty strong meds.  It took a lot longer for me to recover and be able to lay flat, sit up on my own etc.

I was in for 4 days with Molly but they offered the 4th day and I took it.  I had really low blood counts and they wanted to do a transfusion but I felt fine.  I took the extra day because that meant I could bring home Molly on a Monday while Maggie was at DC instead of a Sunday which I felt would be more hectoc with Maggie wanting me immediately.  Overall I recovered so much faster and had so much less pain the second time around.

  • i had a non emergency surgical birth after 40 hrs of labor and 8 hours of pushing. baby was born at 1pm on monday and we went home a 4pm on thursday, so about 3 days later.

  • 2 days only with each one, that was enough for me. 1st was an emergency c-s on Sunday, we were home on Tues

2nd was a planned c-s on Friday, home on Sun. I really liked the Fri c-s as my parents were able to take care of DD over the weekend and bring her to see me, which was very impt to me.

    good luck! so close now!

  • Thanks for posting this as I was wondering too!  I was in for 5 nights and 6 days with DS #1 due to post CS complications with my heart.  My c-section for baby #2 is planned for Friday April 22nd.  Thankfully my dad and finance will be coming to help out for the week following but I imagine it will be a lot harder with recovery having a toddler running around.  When is your cs planned for?  I know we weren't far apart from each other.  Can't believe it's so close!!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. A Thu or Fri CS would be ideal. DH's parents will take care of DD. That way if I get home on Mon or so, she'll still have another full week in daycare.

My due date is around May 20 and the OB said we'll schedule the CS about a week to 10 days before. So, I'm thinking I'll try to schedule it on the 12th or 13th if they have availability.

Yes, recovery is going to be interesting this time. We just moved to a split level that has 4 sets of stairs and 5 different levels. I feel like I'm always up and down the stairs. Plus, I know I won't be able to lift DD. At least I know more of what to expect this time and I also won't skimp on my pain meds like I did last time.

I disagree -- I'm born on the 13th, and my best birthdays ever have always been when they're on Fridays!!  I am due May 22, and would totally schedule my repeat c/s for Fri, 5/13, but my doctors won't schedule me earlier than 39 wks....
