In-home daycare question...

So I've had Lily in in-home daycare since the beginning of February, and it seems to be the trend that our provider is taking around 2 planned personal days each month (in addition to all of the federal holidays, which luckily I have off). What is it like at your daycare? To me this seems a little unreasonable because if we take these days off of work we are never going to have enough vacation time to actually take a family vacation, and I burned all of my vacation time on maternity leave. Luckily I accrue a little more than 14 hours per month, but still I don't want to be wasting my vacation time on long weekends here and there.

Re: In-home daycare question...

  • Our daycare just had the Major holidays off. The daycare M went to was in home but she also had tons of help.

  • Our daycare only takes major holidays off generally speaking. We've been there about 9 months and the only vacation they've taken was an extra Friday on a long weekend (Labor Day) and a couple of days around Christmas.  But, they seriously gave us like 2 months notice on both.

And, our provider is having a baby in August...she told us when she was around 3 mo. pregnant so we could start to plan.  And, they only closed for 1 week with her first kid, so it won't be too extended of a time.

Two days each month seems excessive to me.  I have a ridiculous amount of vacation time at work and I don't even take 2 days per month off.

  • Wow, that wouldn't work for me... I don't get that much time off for the year.  My provider only takes the six major, plus one week of her choice.  That is something I checked before going with her because I see my co-workers deal with their providers taking every school holiday, plus conference, plus snow day, etc., and my position is just not that flexible.

  • That does seem like a lot. Our provider only does the major holidays, which I have off anyway, and a week in the summer and at Christmas.

  • I honestly thought this was something that I knew or had asked before we settled with her last summer, and I'm glad that others feel it is a little excessive as well. I'm going to talk to her about whether these few months have been an anomaly or if it will be continuing. Either way I think that I need to get this figured out before taking any time off of work for ME. Ugh, I am so bad at discussions like these. It really shouldn't be that difficult!

    This exactly.

  • Are they following the local school district calendar? I know our school district has about 2 random days a month that are no school days. If they do and didn't tell you about it first that is strange, if they don't and just decided to take a few personal days here and there, that is even more strange and I wouldn't be ok with it.
  • Weird.  Mine does federal holidays and two weeks of pre-planned vacation a year [with a ton of notice].
