Presidential names

A few months ago, there ws a lively discussion about presidential names because of the populalrity of names like "Madison" ,"Tyler", etc.  I think I even joked that no one ever names their kid "Van Buren". I was eating lunch at school with DD( age 5 in K) and two of her classmates,  One classmate named Reagan (girl) was talking about her siblings.  She mentioned that her brother "Jackson" was very loud and active while her oldest brother "Grant" was quiet.  I remembered she had mentioned having a younger sister but I couldn't rmember her having mentioned the name so I asked.  Her answer-"Kennedy."

Grant, Jackson, Reagan, Kennedy. Yep. All named after presidents.  I wonder if the parents even realize or if they just picked popular names they liked.

Re: Presidential names

  • They had to have know what they were doing. The names styles are to different. The only way they "match" is as a presidential theme. It is one of the least stupid name theme's though, imho.

    Great post

    Great post

They also "match" because they are all last names used as first names, which has been growing in popularity in recent years, in addition to being presidential names. Hopefully, this was done on purpose by the parents, but who really knows.

  • yuck... I hate the presidential names trend. Having four in one family is just icky.
  • Lol... this reminds me of a recent discussion on here about Civil War Generals... Jackson, Lee, Grant... I definitely "hear" these presidents/generals etc when these names are chosen.
  • I know a family lik that too! 4 girls: Reagan, mccinley (sp?), Monroe, and a 4th one that I cannot remember for the life of me...

  • My boss has named his 3 kids after Republican presidents shot in office:

Reagan (girl), Lincoln (boy) and McKinley (girl)

  • I admit I like the name Kennedy, but the 4-some of names does seem to be too much!

  • I went to school with a girl who named her 3 kids Kennedy, Grant, and Jackson. Her major in American History, so I always assumed it was because she was big on history.

  • Aww, I thought you were going to say one of them was Van Buren. Stick out tongue

Really, I guess Van Buren woudn't be that much of a stretch, if it was a fn/mn combo. I have a friend named Van. And Buren could be like one of those "hidden gem middle names" that Angel always talks about.

I think it's kind of cute when a scientist picks all scientist names, or a writer picks all literary names, etc. AS LONG AS the boys have boy names and the girls have girl names. There are plenty of women from throughout history that would have been much better picks for parents who are huge history buffs.

I agree.  I have never liked the "Kennedy-Madison- Taylor-surnames for girls trend" and I absolutely hate McKinley and Reagan for girls!
