Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Would you bring a 1 yo to Disney World?

I just got off the phone with  my mom and they are planning to take a family vacation in to Disney in November (I have two sisters that are 15 & 11) and she wants us to go with her. I'm on the fence about it. K will have just turned one and he won't be able to do anything but ride around in the stroller. I just don't think that would be very fair to him, my mom is convinced that he would be fine.

WWYD? And why?

Re: Would you bring a 1 yo to Disney World?

  • No, I probably wouldn't.

  • Nope. Baby will be in the stroller and someone will have to stay with him at all times.
  • I personally wouldn't. I am going to wait till our second child (whenever we have one) is like 6+. I would like them to remember it and participate in rides and stuff. And not only that, pushing a stroller and possibly dealing with a cranky baby all day is just so exhausting.

    But that's me. I went when I was 8 or 9.

  • Not a chance in he!!.

DIsney is so crowded and the idea of pushing a stroller around all day, someone always getting left behind to watch the stroller and dealing with a cranky 1 year old.... no thank you.

  • Haha, we are going to Disney for P's 1st birthday. I love Disney, I used to work there, and I want to go. Her birthday is the 1st week in December, that's one of the best times to go. It's right after Thanksgiving break, and right before Christmas so parents don't want to pull their kids out of school.

We are going with a large group, and my H hates anything that drops, so he will be chilling with P while the rest of us ride the big people rides. There is a lot to do at Disney that a 1 year old would enjoy.

I think it would be fine!

And just so we are clear, we are going b/c Disney is a central location for both mine, and H's families. It has nothing to do with it being P's birthday present or anything.

  • A 1yr old can do more that you think at WDW. Our nephew was 1 a couple of years ago when we went and it was great. At each park, there is a section of things for little ones to do and rides to go on with an adult (obviously). We go every year and plan on taking LO for his 1st bday...notice the siggy :) Our resort is right on the monorail so transportation is super easy.

you're right about the time of year. It makes a HUGE difference as far as crowds and weather also.

We would be going the week after Thanksgiving, so I don't think it would be crowded, and the weather would be nice. I guess I'm just hesitant to commit to going because I have no idea what his temperament will be like in 7 months. My thinking is, as long as we get park hopper tickets, we could always go to the park in the morning and if K needs a break go back to the hotel until he was ready to go again. I'm not interested in going so much for the rides and such but to just spend some time with my family. Vacations are pretty much the only time they all get along!

We are going at the exact same time.  Four adults and one baby -- I think we can handle it!

I've know people who have done it.  We've been there a bunch of times, so it's not like we are going to be knocking ourselves out to see every damn thing.

This is the key. There is no way I would take her if it was my first time going, and I wanted to see everything. But to just go, move slowly through the parks, hang out and have a good vacation, NBD.

yeah, I have been there numerous times and there is still no way I would bring a one year old.  Seriously, one year old's can't even handle a day at the mall. (As I pleasantly get to see when I work part time at Nordstrom)

  • I'm taking my son in May - he will be 5 months old.  There are things he can do such as the Winnie the poo ride, dumbo, its a small world, Peter Pan, ect.   No, he wont remember it but it will be fun.  Plus, I'll have my wrap so when he's tired I can wrap him up and let him nap or what not.

  • Absolutely! I'm from FL though so going to Disney is no big deal for us since my MIL's BF works there so he gets us in for free but I guess if it's a big trip for yall then I would wait until baby is a little older. Either way there isn't much for him to do until he is old enough to know what's going on.

ETA: November would be a great time to go too. It's off season so it wouldn't be totally packed and the weather shouldn't be too hot. I would go to Magic Kingdom since there is more for the kiddos there.

Sometimes it's okay to follow. (Picture is a clicky)

  • No. When DH and I went on our honeymoon we said we wouldn't go ad long as we had kids in strollers. I'm thinking when they are 6+ but we live far away so it would be a big expensive trip for us.

  • I think it would be fine. I've taken DS to Disneyland twice already and he'll be 6 mon old on Wed. There are some kiddy rides that LOs can go on so they're not left out the entire time.

  • We took DD for her first trip when she was 3yrs old and she can STILL tell you exactly what she did, where she stayed and who she met. We took her again last June and she remembered it all like she lived there. They have better memories than we do!

I wanted to take DS when he was turning 1 but DH said no, it would be right after Halloween so all the hype of that will be done. But I can't talk him into it this year. I have watched parents take infants on rides younger than 1yr old. Otherwise they do have parent swap so someone can stay with LO.

  • Yep, I'm thinking about it too. My SIL and her family are going and we might go with them. I'm not under any illusions that T will remember it. I love Disney and I don't see a big deal as long as  you aren't trying to see everything, and if she melts down eh, what better place than Disney? Also, I think she might actually enjoy the water parks and animals.

Also, fwiw shades of green has 4 day park hoppers for $138 for military.

this exactly (except we are going later this month, when LO will be 5 months)... but we live in Orlando so its NBD for us to go to Disney - and im going b/c my cousin is coming with her kids, so we are going to go for the day and hang with them. i'm bringing a wrap but also my city mini, so it can recline all the way and he can nap in it with the sun canopy all the way down.

oh and to the OP you dont need a park hopper if you are only planning to go to one park - the one day, one park ticket will let you in multiple times the same day

  • lol we would in a heartbeat. We love Disney. DH can't wait to take LO. There are a surprisingly number of rides that the baby can ride either in a carrier or on your lap (especially at Magic Kingdom), and they'd love just watching all the people. If you allow time for plenty of breaks and don't try to cram too much in one day, and allow plenty of time for naps I think it would be fun. The baby's not going to remember it, of course, but you'd get some fun pictures and you and your H will have good memories!

We were in the Orlando area for a wedding a couple years ago and DD#1 was about 18 months old, I couldn't believe all the stuff she could ride with me in the magic kingdom and she just loved it!  I can't wait to take both of my girls again!  Plus kids under 3 are free! I say go for it!

  • We live a few hours away from WDW.  I would do it if it meant meeting up with fam and friends. That time of year will be cooler and way less crowded.

We are thinking of making DD's first trip there in Dec '12. She will be just over 2 at that time. Even though I have been to WDW many times, I have yet to go there for the holidays, so it is something to look forward to.
