book to read aloud to 1st grade class

Hi ladies. My son's 1st grade teacher has asked me to be a "mystery reader" next week. I will be bringing a book to read aloud to the class. Any suggestions? My son reads chapter books and I have NO IDEA what to bring in. I'm trying to find something on amazon and I've googled "book to read aloud to 1st graders" but I'm unfamiliar with all the titles. Does anyone have a favorite?

If I can find time, I'll try the library, but I don't know if I'll get a chance to go.

Thanks!!

Re: book to read aloud to 1st grade class

  • DD reads chapter books too but still likes having picture books read to her.

I read Click Clack Moo to her 1st grade class.  The kids liked doing the sound effects.  Or since it was just Dr. Suess' birthday, maybe a The Cat In the Hat?

  • Any of the Skippyjon Jones books are really fun to read aloud. Even the 4th graders that I teach like to listen to them!

  • My daughter can't stop reading her Way Side School book. They're written by Louis Sachar
  • The Junie B. Jones series is a HUGE hit! If you are looking for more of a picture book option, Eric Carle's illustrations are phenomenal.
  • I just read an Amelia Bedelia book (Amelia Bedelia plays ball I think) to DD's Kindergarten class.  They seemed to enjoy it and laughed at parts.  It would definitely be appropriate for 1st grade and was a good length.
