Nipple stimulation for labor induction?

I will be 39 weeks tomorrow, and am facing an induction at 39w6d for GD, unless I go into labor on my own before then. I have been taking evening primrose oil for the past week, and want to try nipple stimulation to see if I can get things going. I know it won't work if my cervix isn't favorable, but I figure it's worth a try.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Success stories? How to do it? I have a double-electric breast pump, but from what I've read, some sources say to stimulate one nipple at a time, some say both together, and IDK if it should be 5 mins, 15 mins, how often, etc...

Any help appreciated!

  • i've pumped 4 times so far and nothing. just lots of colostrum which kinda freaked me out thinking i would lose the good stuff for DS so i stopped. have you tried to have sex? i know it's unpleasant (believe me) but i know it's supposed to help with the sperm

I had my membranes stripped at 39w 4d with my son and my water broke 2 days later....  in addition to that... lots of walking, sitting with your legs open on an exercise ball... but I believe in the 3 s's

    1. Spicy food

    2. Sex

    3. Sperm

  • The book I have (The Birth Partner by Penny Simpkin) says:

pump one breast for a half hour 3-5 x a day, pausing when a contraction begins and resuming when it stops. If no contractions occur within about 10 minutes, try pumping both breasts, pausing with each contraction. If necessary to increase the intensity/frequency of contractions, continue pumping during as well as between contractions.

If there are no contractions, wait a half day before trying again or try other methods.

sh!t, I pumped for about 3 minutes and had colostrum pouring out, i can't even imagine doing a half hour session! i dunno, that seems excessive

  • None with that. I had to be induced with DS and I tried pretty much everything except for the stuff that makes you have bad diarrhea. With DD I took a warm bath and noticed that I was having a backache off and on that would move it's way around to my belly (and then my belly would tighten like a BH then go away). I got out of the tub and DH and I BD. I had my DD 11 hours later.

  • There's a few other pressure points that my massage therapist & chiropractor told me about.  One is the webbing between your thumb & first finger.  The other is about 3 fingers up from your heel bone (both the inside and outside of your leg).  They said to really push & hold the pressure for a few minutes... not just rub these areas.
