Re: in response to the iron question below...

  • when I was BFing DD#1 I was told to give her the poly-vi-sol.  But when we switched to formula around 4 months the doc we could stop with the vitamin because the formula is so heavily fortified.  Doc said for DD#2 even though we're supplementing her BM with Enfacare we still need to give her the vitamins.

  • Thanks for your input! I am going to talk with the doc but I feel the same ...like the formula should certainly have enough ...def don't want him to be constipated...thank you!

  • good point! ya it was just regular poly vi sol ...that was when i was breastfeeding and it was the one the nicu said to get for some reason? not sure why now it's been a few months but that's right there is a difference...

  • Same situation...but pedi had blood work done on DS...she was anemic still so vitamins were needed.  So I wouldn't stop the drops unless they say you can.

  • I breastfed through 14 months and we were told to give Poly Vi Sol for the vitamin D- not because of iron. If they had you give regular Poly- Vi- Sol and didn't say "with iron" you were probably giving it for the vitamin D.

If that's the case you won't need it on formula. We did have to start giving Poly with Iron at 9 months after our son tested anemic. It's really common ever in late term preemies, but they will do a blood test and specifically tell you to get the iron supplement if you are having anemia issues.
