High-Risk Pregnancy

Lurker with a question for GD moms

Hi ladies,

I was diagnosed with GD three weeks ago and saw a diabetes nurse and dietitian and my numbers have been fine on my new lower carb diet. I go to an OB practice with three doctors. The first doctor I saw after my diagnose didn't mention anything about a high risk doctor or an endocrinologist, but the doctor I saw today asked if I was seeing one of the two and recommended I work with an endocrinologist that I wouldn't actually have to see very often, just fax him my blood sugar numbers. (She suggested this even after she said my numbers were great and she was very surprised by my diagnosis.)

So, my question is, are you seeing any speciality doctors?

Re: Lurker with a question for GD moms

  • I didn't with my first pregnancy. A group of dietitians at the hospital worked with me to manage my diet, and if my numbers were too high they would conference with my OB to up my insulin dosage. My OB took care of all extra monitoring.

With this pregnancy, I am at a new practice and have been referred to a dietitian againd, as well as an endocrinologist. I go see her in about a week. I'm not sure how often I will see her or what role she'll be playing in my care.

  • Nope.  They had me take a class to learn more about it, how to use the meter, and how to plan out my meals.  Once a week a nurse that specializes in GD calls for a check-in to get my week's levels and answers any questions.

  • My office refers you to a diabetes center at the time of the diagnosis and I'm expected to see them for almost all of my GD care.  My OB will occasionally ask how my numbers are and of course she gets records sent from the diabetes center.

I see the dietician every 2-3 weeks and have to send them my numbers once a week.  Once I started on bedtime insulin I had to see the nurse practitioner there.  There is an endo on staff but haven't needed to see her.  I am guessing thats if my #'s get out of control?!?
