Babies: 3 - 6 Months

This is "developmental," right?

For the past few weeks, my baby (17 wks) has been trying to roll from back to tummy, and tummy to back.   In the past two days she's stepped up her efforts, and today--after lots of effort-- managed her second roll from back to tummy!  Over the weekend she also became more aggressively "grabby"  (at toys, mommy's hair, mommy's earrings, etc.), and began to bear a surprising amount of weight on her legs when I "stand" her on my lap.  It's been exciting to watch her!

However, crying and fussing have also increased. Today, for instance, it took me 45 minutes to put her down for a nap that she clearly needed; and then she woke after only 30 minutes, SCREAMING and twisting in her swing, as if trying roll over.  (Over the past few weeks she's done this at night, too, every now and then.)  By only 3PM she was an inconsolable, crying mess.  At 5 PM she fell asleep through sheer exhaustion, I'm convinced...

Please reassure me: This is developmental, right??  She's probably only tired out from so much effort; four month regression; etc.?   Part of my mind keeps saying "This can't be normal!  Crying was supposed to peak at six weeks, and at four months she's crying more than she ever did as a newborn!!"  :)

Re: This is "developmental," right?

  • DD cried way more from 3-4 months than as a newborn and she was a colicky baby.  I do think that they get more fussy when they're going through a new developmental leap, especially if doing multiple leaps at once.

  • Yeah, I honestly think part of it is the fact that they want to do more than they're capable. E.g. twisting in her swing may be that she wants to get up out of it, but can't!

  • Remy was really fussing at about 3.5 months to 4.5 months. He actually started doing the EXACT same thing that your LO is doing.

So know that it does go away. It takes time. And it's just a stage. Remy had some really bad gas as well as a growth spurt during that time too. (He arched his back A LOT because he had an upset stomach.)

  • Totally normal.  There is a "wonder week" at week 19, but the signs usually start around week 15-16, and crying is one of the signs.  Check out the book The Wonder Weeks for more info - it's amazing!!
