Preemies

When did your preemie start daycare?

I was fortunate to be able to keep my 33 weeker home with a nanny for 2.5 years. My brother just had a 31 weeker (measured 2 lbs 10 oz due to IUGR). They are lucky that his wife is a teacher so she'll be able to be home with him this summer, but will need to return to school in the fall and will probably have to explore in-home daycare or possibly a center. Can I hear the stories of your young preemie and daycare experience?

Re: When did your preemie start daycare?

  • DS started at 14 weeks actual age (6 weeks adjusted).  We used a public center, and honestly didn't really have any problems.  DS stayed relatively healthy (didn't seem to be sicker than any other baby) and did great.  Honestly, he gets sick ALOT less often than the kids of the SAHMs I know, ironically.

He did get really sick his first fall in DC (about 9 months old then), with lots of breathing problems and ear infections, but that ended up being something totally different and not at all related to the fact he was in daycare.  Once we got that under control he's been healthy as a horse!

  • My DD started daycare when she was 9 months old (in August). We decided to place her in an in-home, instead of the daycare center and mainly that was due to how crazy expensive they were. I was hoping for a smaller amount of kids that she would be around. The summer wasn't to bad, she hardly got sick, but once the winter hit, she was getting sick every two weeks or so. I have family who does help out, so when she did get sick, my aunt would usually watch her, until she started to feel 100% better. Her biggest bout with a cold was about a month ago, she came down with pneomonia. I keep her out of daycare for a week. She's been sick free for about 2 weeks, this morning she woke up with a runny nose. It's really a crappy cycle, but I'm really can't wait until spring/summer really breaks and I can catch another break.

    Good luck with your decision.

  • My son was born close to 31 weeks.  We actually cleared the waitlist because he was born early.  He started at the beginning of September.   I have a great daycare a retirement home.  They are really good with him.  And there was a variety of ages of the babies in the infant room, so he has some good buddies.

It is a little stressful when there are snow days or the daycare is not open.

He occasionally will get a cold, but it has been manageable-Nosefrida, Boogie Wipes, Cool Mist Humidifier.  He did not get sent home for a small cold.

It was only recently that my baby got sick (from both ends), and he was out for 3 days last week.  My son has had all of his shots, and he had the Synagis shots for RSV from November to March which helped us to be more confident with daycare.
