  • I didn't see the episode but I really hope they didn't do a preemie musical episode like I have been hearing. If they did, and I wouldn't put it past them, that's just awful. Save the musicals for feel good episodes.

  • I thought it was awful. Several members of my family called to make sure I wasn't watching it, but I was and I cried and I won't be tuning in again. And my kid has been out of the NICU for a year and it was still traumatizing!

I honestly didn't think it was in poor taste at all. It wasn't like there was a chorus line as they delivered her 23-weeker or anything. That being said, I really wish that they weren't launching a preemie story line, since like my TV to be an escape and not a reminder of reality. But I'm in a pretty good mental place at the moment so I might be a bad judge. Last season Grey's did an episode with a preemie that had me sobbing on the couch for an hour.

It was bad taste. It would have been a very moving episode had it not been a musical. Part of me doesnt want to watch for the next few weeks and part of me wants to see how they'll handle all of this.

ETA: I think the reason I think it was in bad taste is because the whole concept of it being "a musical" really took away from the fact that Callie was clinging to life, and her baby was born at 23 weeks. I think it would have been an amazing episode without the musical hype.

  • I'm hoping that having a preemie story line makes people understand a little better just how scary it is. A lot of people think preemies are just regualr babies who are small and don't realize all the health issues that come along with it. Hopefully Greys does it well enough to portray the roller coaster it really is.

That being said, these next few episodes are going to be difficult to watch.

  • I didn't think it was in poor taste...just because it was a "musical" doesn't make it light hearted...music can be very serious as were most of the selections in the episode.

I did have a hard time seeing the preemie baby though - but as a previous poster mentioned, maybe this is something that can educate those who are unaware of the struggles of preemies and their families.

I agree with all of this. Especially the part of educating others.

I had the same thoughts as well. It looks like they're not going to go the "she's small but she just needs to grown and she can go home" route like I've seen before on TV. I hope the do the story-line and right and help raise awareness about prematurity.

  • I have mixed feelings about it.  It was kinda funny explaining to my inlaws who have not watched the show for the past couple of years what was happening on the show.  I thought the Meredith moment when she remembers how she felt at the baby shower was very real and honest--just how crazy the world is.

The "It's a Preemie Thing" on Facebook had 54 comments on the show--referring to it as a Glee type show.  They have mixed emotions as well.

  • I liked the episode. The songs made me cry even more. Last year private practice did a preemie/loss episode a few weeks after we lost Aidan and I was glad they did. It helped, in my opinion, bring more awareness to preemies and loss. I felt a little less alone, if that makes sense.

All of this!! I hope that they won't just fast forward through it & make her come home in the next two episodes. It would be nice if they showed the real struggle we all go through having a preemie.

  • I thought having it be musical kind of "cheapened" it. I dunno. And I hated that Callie was trying to wake herself up b/c she saw the baby and realized she needed to be there for her and then the first thing she says when she wakes up was "yes, I'll marry you" That was lame. And unrealistic. IRL she'd have been all "HOW IS MY BABY?!" I don't know if I can watch the next few weeks :/

I liked the episode too, but I burst into tears as soon as they delivered her preemie. Every time I think I am starting to push NICU memories to the back of my mind, seeing things like that throws them right back to the forefront again.

Hopefully this will educate a lot of people about preemies, but most simply don't get it.  I do wish they had maybe had her be a tad further along in the pregnancy though, because I feel like they might take this storyline in an unrealistic direction based on the baby's gestational age.
