  Here's a lit of questions we used as a guide.  We also use Breedlove for payroll/taxes.  They've been wonderful to work with.

   

  Experience

  1. Why are you a nanny?

  2. How long have you been a nanny?

  3. How old were the other children you cared for?

  4. Why did you leave your previous job?

  5. Do you have any formal education in early childhood development or training in childcare?

  6. Do you have CPR (infant) and first-aid training? CPR: Yes / No First aid: Yes / No.  If not, would you be willing to become certified?  Yes / No

  7. What would you do if my child suddenly got sick or had a serious accident?

  Approach

  1. What do you like about being a nanny?

  2. What about being a nanny could you do without?

  3. Please tell me about three things you most enjoy doing with children.

  4. How do you approach difficulties over bedtimes or meals?

  5. How do you discipline children?

  6. How do you comfort children?

  7. How might you and my child spend a typical day? What types of activities do you think are important to include?

  8. What are some of the rules you've followed in other households that you think work well?

  9. Which rules don't work for you?

  10. Describe your ideal family to work for:

  11. Do you have any pet peeves about parents? About children?           

  12. Will you be good-natured about filling me in on the things my child said and did that I missed during the day?           

  13. Will you be comfortable about filling me in on any mishaps that occur?

  Logistics

  1. When can you start working?

  2. Are you willing to do light chores while children are napping? If so, which ones?

  3. Do you drive? Yes / No

  4. Do you have your own car? Yes / No

  5. Will you ever be available to work evenings or weekends? Yes / No

  Salary and benefits

  1. What is your salary range?

  2. Do you require any benefits? Yes / No  If so what would you propose?          

  3. How do you prefer to arrange your meals? Do you like to bring your own lunch and snacks? If you expect food to be provided, do you have any special dietary needs?

  4.  Do you have any objection to signing a contract?  Yes / No

  Personality

  While she's in your home, give each candidate a chance to spend some time with your child. Does she seem attentive? How does your child interact with her? Your observations will strongly influence your choice, so invite final candidates to come back for a second visit and spend an hour or so playing with your child, and take a moment to ask yourself the following questions.

  1. Does the nanny seem comfortable holding or speaking to your child? Yes / No

  2. Is she pleasant to be with? Yes / No

  3. Is your child engaged and enjoying her company? Yes / No

  4. While you're at work, will you feel at ease knowing your child is with her? Yes / No

  References

  1. Could you recommend families I can call for references?

  I found a bunch of questions just by googling. I would have them all printed off and just kinda go through the ones that made sense with the particular person. A lot of times, many of the questions were answered in casual conversation, so I always had a bunch of alternative ones to keep the flow going.

  We don't use a service for payroll, I just do it myself. It takes a bit of time to figure everything out, but once you do, it's easy peasy.

  We do our own nanny taxes-- it's really not hard at all.  I can walk you through the steps if you want.

  We also went through many of the questions listed above.  This may seem obvious, but make sure she interacts with the baby.  Is she affectionate?  Happy to be holding the baby?  Does she have nice things to say about her previous families? When you call her references, don't forget to ask if she is punctual and about her attendance.
