Thoughts and Prayers needed please (long)

Friday afternoon was my NT Scan, and the good news is that the baby looked great and we left with some fun pictures which I posted earlier.  Granted, we won't know the test results until after the bloodwork comes back, but we have every reason to think everything is fine.

The "bad" news is that they also found a pretty sizeable cyst on my right ovary, although at the time they were just referring to it as a "mass".  I think it measured something like 2in. x 5in. in size, so about 10in.sq.  The ultrasound tech. took quite a few pictures/measurements of it to send to my OB.  The specialist came back to talk to us before we left, and explained that while he was pretty confident that it was just a large cyst, he had some concerns due to the large size and something about the profile of the edges.  At that time, he couldn't even tell us 100% that it WAS a cyst, or even confirm that it was ON my ovary.  He mentioned something about probably having to go to a gynecological radiologist and most likely needing surgery for it.  Obviously I was concerned and asked some questions regarding a possible surgery, and he said that between 13 and 20 weeks is the best time to do surgery on a pregnant woman.  He forwarded the pictures to my OB and said that she would be calling me on Monday morning.  I tried to call her office after we left but they were closed early with it being Friday.

Needless to say, it was a pretty stressful weekend not really knowing what we were dealing with.

This morning I was finally able to speak to my Dr.   She is almost certain that the "mass" is an ovarian cyst.  They made an appt. for me on Thursday morning to go see this radiologist to get some more pictures/measurements taken so they can better figure out exactly what type of cyst it is and "figure out a plan" as she put it..  She made me feel better by explaining that there were different types of cysts, ranging from simple ones to more complex, and that mine was probably just a more complex one.  Considering I've been thinking I might have a tumor, cancer, etc. all weekend long, finding out that it's almost definitely "just" a cyst is a big relief.  She said that after they get some better images, we'll start discussing the surgery and hopefully (depending on the results) she can remove it laparoscopically.

So if you could all just keep me (and baby!) in your thoughts and prayers until this is all over with, I'd really appreciate it.  I'm so relieved to hear that she doesn't think it's anything more serious that  a cyst.  Thank you God!

  • I had an ovarian cyst (still have? don't know) prior to getting pregnant, but it was a simple cyst.  They told me it was 1) very common 2) would likely go away on its own and 3) wouldn't interfere with a pregnancy.

Try not to worry, and know that they happen a lot, even during pregnancy.  GL!

  • I will definitely keep you in my thoughts!  I hope everything is OK.

  • Obviously being pregnant heightens your worry, but I want to let you know that I've had complex ovarian cysts removed from both ovaries. While surgical recovery is never fun, the pain I had from the cysts themselves when they were at their worse was much worse. I'll be praying for you and your little one.

  • Thinking of you....

Do you have any pain or discomfort?  I saw my Dr. today because of some low achy pain in my lower right abdomen and he thinks it's a cyst that is contracting but didn't seem overly concerned.  We didn't do an u/s, so he's just going on what I told him.

  • Wow, so sorry you're dealing with this! Though, I'm glad your doctor was pretty confident that it is something manageable. T&P's to you and the baby.  Keep us posted!

Thank you for this.  I know that I'll definitely be having it removed in the next month or so, so I'm glad to know you've had the surgery as well and you're fine.  Did you happen to have any of the surgeries while pregnant? I have a friend who had a cyst a couple years ago and it was removed laproscopically.  From what she described, it sounds like a bit milder form of my C-section recovery, so I know what to expect somewhat if that is the case.  Thanks for the thoughts and prayers!

It's hard to say for sure whether or not the aches/pains that I've been having on and off are from the cyst or not.  The ultrasound tech. acted like I should be doubled over in pain from the size of the thing, but that hasn't been the case.  For the last few days I swear I've been feeling it more, but who knows if that's just because I'm aware of it now! Good luck to you as well.

  • Sending positive thoughts your way. I know how scary it can be to hear something like that, but cysts are not that hard to remove. I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year ago, and at that time had over a kilo worth of cysts removed laparoscopically from my right ovary, and a bit less than that removed from my left ovary. I've never had a c-section, but had a friend have one the same week and my recovery was like a tiny version of her recovery. Same idea, but just on a small scale. I ended up with 3 incisions which lengthened recovery time by a bit.

If you have any questions, I can try to help!

Thank you so much for sharing your story! That is really encouraging.  I just might be paging you with some questions once I know a little bit more about the surgery plans.  Thanks!

  • Sending thoughts and prayers you way.

I had a 6 cm x 7 cm (approx 2.4 inch x 2.5 inch) dermoid cyst on my left ovary.  I had surgery for it in December (prior to getting pregnant).  My left ovary was actually removed as well due to the fact that the cyst was so ingrained onto the ovary.  The cyst was not able to be removed laproscopically, so I have an incision across my bikini line of a similar size to a c-section scar (probably about 6 inches).  Basically my surgery was very similar to a c-section except my uterus was not opened up.

Dermoid cysts are different than the "normal" cyst in that they are not fluid filled and will not burst or go away on their own.  Dermoid cysts are tissue filled.

My doctor did not want me to be pregnant for the surgery, and from my understanding it was because of the anestetic (sp?).  However, if your doctor feels that it's safe to do surgery, they obviously feel that it is safe.

Best of luck.  Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
