Has anyone else never had it? Toodle is vaccinated so I'm not that worried about him, but I'm pretty sure I've never had it and am terrified of catching it as an adult when I understand it's much worse. I say I'm pretty sure I haven't had it because my mom is worthless on stuff like that, she has no idea if I did or not and I don't recall having it once I was old enough to remember - and DH assured me I'd remember. My brother got it in college too, which lends further evidence to my not ever having had it (if one of us had it I'd guess all the kids would have caught it).
Can you get the vaccine as an adult? Should I?
ETA: If I did get it as an adult it would obviously be after this pregnancy was over and I was done nursing. I won't even take tylenol when pregnant, LOL!
Re: s/o Chicken Pox
I don't know if you can get varicella immunizations as an adult. I guess in my uneducated-ness about it, I'd be worried about Shingles coming from it. Shingles (similar virus in adults) are nasty and painful and oh so horrible.
You can get a tider if you're really worried. that will say whether you have or don't have the antibodies. (I think I'm using the right words, lol)
No idea on whether or not you can get it as an adult, but I just wanted to say, that theory is not correct. My sister got it and I did not, despite us sharing a room at the time.
I got it the following winter when it pretty much went through my 3rd grade class.

.
I had it as a child.
(Ok, I totally had to respond to this b/c of your pet peeve post earlier.
I'm such help! haha!)
You can get a titer done to see if you are immune......I had it done when I was 18.
The story is that I never got them as a kid. My sister had them BAD and I didn't get them from her. A close friend in 5th grade got them and my mom made me spend 2 nights with her and I still didn't get them!
In college, I began working in several daycares and this is when the vaccine became more widely available. My doc drew a titer and I was not immune, so given the fact that I was working with kids a lot, they gave me the vaccine.
I have actually been meaning to ask someone about a booster because now they are giving kids boosters a couple years later. My kids are (and will be....) vaccinated, but working in a middle school, I worry about catching them. We have been seeing an increase in chicken pox cases in the middle school kids, so this concerns me.
I'm not doing anything until after the baby comes, but I would ask your OB and/or regular doc about it.
I agree you would likely remember. But, I will tell you my sis had it and has no recollection. We lived in an apartment building (6 family) and all the units had kids. It went through the building twice (my Mom tried really hard for us TO CATCH it the first time, LOL) but we did the second round (about a year apart). I remember it (a little, I was 7), my cousin who is 6 has no memory of it (her mom is worthless, my Mom had to show her pics to assure her she had it:) and my 4 year old sis has no memory. So, maybe there is a chance?
No really helpful advice (which lends itself to your other post, huh?):)
I did not get it until I was 17 (sorry if this falls into your pet peeve category, since I did actually have it ; ) But....my brother had it when I was 12 and I never got it, all of my cousins had it when I was a baby and we were forced to sleep in the same bed as them so we would all have it at once but no luck. And lots of my friends had it throughout the years, many of whom my mother made me drink after, etc.
Then, when I finally got them senior year, I had like 20 on my entire body. One of my friends got them from me the next week and had them down her throat they were so bad, so I always worry I will get them again. So, if I had never had them I would try to get the vaccine.
I've never had it. As a young adult, I was paranoid about catching it so I got the vaccination when it was first available as an option. No one at the time in my doctor's office realized that adults need the vaccination and then a booster so it was all for nothing; I was still not immune. So I did it again, this time doing the two shots over x amount of weeks/months (don't remember the exact details). Fast forward to getting ready to do DIUI; we had to get tested for all sorts of stuff and it came back that despite having the vaccination/booster for a total of 3 shots, I STILL wasn't immune! So I don't know what kind of freak show my body is but I'm so scared that I'll get it and it'll be awful. But what can I do? I had to sign a waiver both times for DIUI to recognize that I realized the risks of proceeding with pregnancy while being immune. I stopped serving in my church nursery during pregnancy but have returned to it and just hope for the best. I think that maybe for whatever reason, even though I don't show up as immune, I've got enough anitbodies or something protecting me? My mom exposed my sister and me to it every chance she got and I made deliberate efforts to get innoculated so it's not like I was sheltered from the virus; for some reason (at least so far, knock wood), I don't seem succeptible to catching it.
I'd look into getting the vaccination because if it does take, it'll be one less thing to worry about. But have yourself tested afterward to see if you truly are immune so you don't have a false sense of security about it.
