Like I said, I hate guns and won't own one ever. My grandfather only has one kidney because he was accidentally shot by his brother and almost died around age 10 or 12. But I agree about teaching your kid gun safety because it's lame to have guns be a big off-limits mystery.
I personally don't really know much about guns or gun safety myself. I won't even pick one up. I'm uncomfortable with it.
So how do I go about teaching my kid? Do they offer classes? Do I have someone I know and trust do it? Do I just have DH (who has a basic knowledge of guns and used to shoot with his cop cousins once in awhile) do it...is that enough? Or does it need to be more formal?
Re: Gun safety Q from a non-gun owner
If your DH's cousins are/were cops, then they may provide some good teaching information. They have to go through safety classes as part of their training; they may also be able to point you in the direction of classes or other information sessions locally if you are not near them.
My DH has several guns in the house and when DD is old enough we will go through safety training with her and emphasize these are not toys, etc.
I know that the local range where we shoot offers formal classes for younger children. For us, we plan to teach Ian ourselves. We both have carry conceal permits (you have to take classes to obtain one) and we have continued on into double tap classes (tactical shooting).
If you know nothing or have just recreationally shot in the past, I would suggest he go to a class or have a family member with a lot of experience teach him. There's a lot more to gun safety than "keep the barrel pointed down".
Alex and I are the same (minus the tactical shooting) - we both have conceal permits and we shoot on a regular basis at a local range.
I would suggest calling ranges when C is old enough to understand and respect gun safety and have your DH (and you if you are up for it) attend a class with him.
Checking loading and whether the gun is cocked or not varies greatly in the type of gun it is (single action, single action revolver, double action revolver, rifle...) and the brand.
I come from a non gun using family and I was never around them until I met my husband. I have a def. fear of guns. That being said, if your husband has one and it's in the house, it would be a good idea for you to take a gun safety class. I actually took the concealed weapons class. I'm not interested in shooting or owning one myself, but the best way to keep yourself and your child safe is to educate yourself.
You can start when they are small teaching them to stop, don't touch, run away, and go tell an adult.
This exactly. Our children will be taking a gun safety class before being able to shoot.
Me too.
PS, baby T watley is just adorbs in that pic! I just want to pick him up and give him a hug!
I just wanted to pop in and give a
.
The reason why so many people get hurt or just "hate guns" is because they are uneducated and people are afraid of the unfamiliar.
You can't always follow Conall over to every friends house so it's great that you are going to teach him early what to do if he ever saw one.
