Thinking about divorcing an addict

Fairly new here, but I left my addict/alcoholic husband on Thursday to get away for a while and think.  I'm thinking that there is a good chance that I will eventually file for divorce.  I am wondering if it would be to my advantage to get him into some type of treatment center in order to have documentation of his problem once it comes time for custody if I do file for divorce.  Has anyone dealt with this before?

  • I wish I had answers for you. I'm going through this exact situation now except that DH left ME!! Ironic. Anyway, you've come to the right place. You'll get lots of great advice on this board. Good luck!

  • Do you have any other evidence that suggests that he's an addict (pictures of drugs, history of jail, Driving Under the Influence, etc.)?  I wouldn't recommend YOU footing the bill for HIM to be in rehab, just to have proof of an addiction.

Likely if you left him he'll dig his own grave by spiraling downward.  They usually do.  I have an XH who's an addict and I write about it a lot in my blog.

  • Sorry you are going through this. :(

In addition to what achase said... you can't really put him in treatment. He needs to put himself there.

  • Hello,

My ex is an addict and he went through rehab twice.  We just recently went through the whole court process and the judge totally didn't care that he had past drugs issues because he said everyone deserves a second chance.  He has a horrible past but because he appears to be clean now he got a lot of visitation time and without it being supervised.  I thought that being an addict would play a key role in my situation, but in the end it meant nothing.  Judges seem to be siding more with the fathers these days and they are all about fair and equal parenting.
