can we only have 3 meals and 3 snacks or can we eat in between? What can we have in unlimited amounts that has no carbs in it that we can grab anytime we're hungry? I need to have some of these things close by in case I can't eat enough in the meal or snack sitting.
What were the carb #s you were given for each meal?
For me currently b-fast I can only have 15g carb, lunch & dinner is 45 and snacks are 30. The nutritionist said they only give me a week to get #s under control, I see her next Thurs for my follow up. Not sure what the next step is.
What is your target b.s #?
For me my fasting is supposed to be below 90, and below 140 after b-fast, lunch & dinner. Not sure what is considered too low though...
Re: GD mommas, question about meals/snacks & your numbers
my carb guidelines are 15g-30g from breakfast (no milk or fruit), 15g-30g for snacks, and 30g-45g for lunch and dinner. i need to eat protein with each of them.
they want my fasting # under 90, and my 1 hour after meal # under 120.
i've been on the diet and testing for almost 3 weeks. my fasting numbers have been going up every week and this past week they were 90-95. my diabetes counselor said the next step for me is going on insulin at night to control my morning numbers. i meet with my ob on monday to discuss.
i've never had to worry about too low numbers because i've never had anything less than 80's...but I believe that under 65 is considered too low.
I get 23 grams of carbs for breakfast, 15 for morning/afternoon snack, and 30 for bedtime snack, lunch and dinner. No milk before noon, fruit at lunch only. This is my second pregnancy with GD; with my first, I was to be under 140 at one hour. With this one, I am to be under 120 at one hour. Too low is anything under 60.
As far as eating in between, you should stick to your 3 snacks and 3 meals. The diet is designed that way to keep your blood sugar stable. Eating in between can cause your blood sugar to rise or stay too high. If you are hungry on your diet, talk to your nutritionist about adjusting your plan to help you stay fuller longer.
ETA: My fasting needs to be below 90.

- 30 g for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, 45 g for dinner
- I get to eat breakfast, morning snack, lunch, 2 afternoon snacks, dinner, and nighttime snack
- make sure the time from your last snack to when you do your fasting check is between 8-10 hours.
- No milk and fruit first thing in the morning and no fruit right before bed
- Most veggies are "free" food. The foods you really need to pay extra attention to are your carbs (dairy, starch, and fruit.)
- Fasting # needs to be between 60-95 and after meal #'s should be less than 140 and no more than 175.
I have found that pairing a lot of things with peanut butter for my snack helps keep me full. I also try to eat slowly to help my body digest the food better and I feel full better. When you eat too fast it takes your body longer to realize it's full, causing you to want to eat more. Try to also pair a carb with a protein for your snacks. Sipping milk helps to make myself feel fuller. Drinking lots of water in between helps as well.
I have the same guidelines as the first poster. When I was working she had me eat two snacks between each meal- she doesn't care how many snacks as long as there ate 1.5-2hrs in-between. So my sched was:
6:30 Breakfast
8:30/10:30 Snacks
12:30 Lunch
2:00/4:30 Snacks
6:30 Dinner
9:30 Bedtime Snack
Now that I'm on bedrest I am nowhere near as hungry so I usually only eat one snack in between.
The PP's have some great suggestions for you.
You'll almost certainly know if you get too low - you'll feel it. You'll be wobbly, dizzy, unable to concentrate, really irritable, and you might feel sick. Your chances of going dangerously low controlling diabetes with diet and exercise are pretty remote; you might have a little more to worry about if you're taking insulin or glyburide. Anything below 60-65 is considered low.

My doctor said absolutely no snacking between meals.
My numbers are supossed to be less than 90 fasting, and less than 130 two hours after meals.
I dont know what is a low number threshhold, but when I followed the menu they gave me, my numbers were in the 50's and I felt like crap.
The doctor also said to remember that "free food" doesnt mean "unlimited amounts", but you can add one or two a day without concern.
There are a lot of foods that have "hidden" carbs, but you really just need to worry about counting the starches/starchy vegetables, fruits, and milk/yogurt. Cheese is a great protein, I eat a lot of cheese. As for nuts, I was told I can have 1/4 cup of nuts but I have to count them as a fat and a protein.
Examples of snacks for me: 5 or 6 whole wheat ritz crackers with some cut up cheddar cheese, toast with peanut butter, half an english muffin with a string cheese, half of a mini bagel topped with peanut butter, popcorn (great choice, lots of fiber!) with a string cheese. Occasionally I will have CarbSmart vanilla ice cream and melt peanut butter to pour over top - my dietitian during my first pregnancy called that my "pregnant lady craving" but it was almost always good for my fasting number!

Just wanted to suggest having something sugary before bed. My numbers were consistently high when I ate the suggested carb/ protein intake. When I started having a small sugary snack and no protein my numbers stay low or right on target (75-90).
Good luck! I am terrified to be insulin dependent for any of my numbers.
I can have 20-25 for Breakfast, 30 for AM snack, (no milk or fruit before noon), 45-55 lunch, 30 Mid afternoon snack, 60 dinner, 25-30 pm snack.
I have to be under 90 for fasting and 2 hours after meals under 120.
BTW, if you NEED and I mean NEED something in between, I was told protein only. But now that I have been doing this for a month or so, I am way better about knowing what fills me up. I never need to eat between, however sometimes I am overjoyed when the 2 hour mark hits.
