Registry at Babies R Us or BuyBuyBaby?

We live in Fairfax near the Vienna metro.  We don't have a BabiesRUS or BuyBuyBaby close.  Our friends are mostly in the Fairfax/Vienna area and Montgomery County.  Family are in SC, where BRU and BBB are literally across the street from each other.

So I don't know what to do in terms of registering -- Babies R Us or Buy Buy Baby?

And would it be tacky (or difficult to manage) if I registered for the same stuff at both places so that people could choose whichever one they liked better?  What if I also register at a third place (e.g., Great Beginnings or Pottery Barn Kids)?  Too much?

  • Another option is that you could use something like MyRegistry.com. I used that because I wanted items from a number of different stores and I didn't want to be limited. It also made it easy for people to order stuff online. I also found that places like Amazon and other online retailers sometimes had much better prices on certain items. It still requires some maintanence and you have to set up everything you want but I thought it was user friendly and it worked well for me.

The BRU in Chantilly isn't that far from you - I live near there too. :-)

I went over to BBB in Springfield the other day and the prices there are noticeably higher than BRU if that matters to you at all.  Alas, I registered at both places and just deleted things from my registry at the other place if it was bought at one.  I find that most people shop online anyway.

  • I registered at BBB and Target, picking BBB over BRU since I felt that there was a lot more to choose from at BBB. Target was the second pick since a lot of my family isn't accessible to a BBB, although as luck would have it they are opening one in my parents town this summer.

It's true that most people shop online, I found that out last year with my wedding registry. Plus any duplicates you get you can return for store credit or more baby stuff, that's our plan of action.

    Good luck!

  • we registered at both (and put similar items on both) because we had OOT family that didn't have a BBB near them.  it was fairly easy to manage the BRU registry online because you can just click to mark something as purchased (in fact, we never went to the store to register, just did it all online).  BBB you have to call them to mark something as purchased, but you can delete items easily online.  We opted not to delete things that were purchased though, it makes returns easier if the item is still on your registry.

This is exactly what we did too.  I just found that we received a lot more help from the salespeople at BBB, so we registered there first and then copied a few things over to BRU.  When everything was gone out of a certain price range, or two weeks before my shower(s), I added a few more things to BRU.

  • We registered at BRU and Great Beginnings...  GB was so helpful in walking us through all of the things we should register for and really took their time with us, told us what we did and didn't need, etc.  They even showed us pages from consumer reports, the baby bargains book, etc. to support their recs.  They were fantastic!  People just shopped online for both registries if they weren't local.
