Preemies

Moms of older preemies - WWYD?

RSV season ended here on April 1. We were invited to the birthday party of a good friend's child on April 17. The party is at Kid Junction. We've never been to one of those places, because of the germ factor, but I planned to attend this one. I figure that Charlie and Lily are almost 2, RSV season is over, and they've handled every cold they've ever gotten like champs. But now I'm getting cold feet! Mainly because we have a NICU follow-up appointment 3 days after the party that I don't want to have to cancel because they're sick. So WWYD? Is going to that party pretty much a guarantee that they'll catch a cold?

  • I would take them.  We've taken the boys out all winter this year.  Yes they've gotten sick )c:  and had RSV twice )c: but I do feel like it's going to happen eventually.  I would just make sure to sanitize well after and prepare yourself that they may get a cold.  I wouldn't say it's a guarantee... the boys don't get sick every time we take them out to an indoor play place... we usually go once a week and they were sick in November and April.

  • I would go and try to have a good time and relax while also taking precautions.  Take hand sanitizer or wipes with sanitizer in them and every so often clean their hands. Wipe down the table area in front of them and perhaps the seat they will sit on if there is no table cloth on it when they sit down to eat or if it looks grimey. Watch out for kids with coughs or runny noses and politely steer the kids in another direction to avoid the germs. Watch to make sure they don't pick up random kid's sippy cups. They will have some potential exposure, but I would take them.

Is the party early in the day or late?  If it is early in the day you can take some comfort in that the germs from the previous day will have been cleaned off and/or won't survive the night without a "host" on the plastic and metal surfaces, etc. and you may not need to take that many precautions  If it is later in the day, then there will be greater germ build up and you might want to take more precautions.

  • I would go, but know your limit of what you can actually tolerate.  For example, my first few outings with DD I would set goals for how long we would stay at a place like Germ Junction, or, I would allow myself to leave with DD if I saw multiple kids hacking and sneezing.  I really had to practice.  Now is as good a time as any. GL!

  • I'm not familiar with Kid Junction in particular, but, I think if you want to go then go.

Andrew is 2 yrs old and has had a lot of colds and infections, but never RSV.  This winter even he is in a kid's group (meets 2/month), I've taken him on lots of play dates, to the grocery, and even the children's museum and he plays in the kid's area...germ fests....

SO far, he hasn't once gotten sick from any of those places.  The ONLY times he's actually gotten a cold is direct contact with an obviously sick kid.  And his immune system is below normal.

The first time he got sick was a bday party at someone's house, and one of the kids was just blowing snot rockets everywhere and they were sharing toys - - and there wasn't much I could do.  I knew he would get sick and he did, but it wasn't RSV season and he was okay.

I think they will be okay.  They might catch a cold but if you wash their hands after they are done playing, they might not...even my little guy doesn't and his immune system is below normal and he bites his hands constantly (hands in mouth) because he is cutting his 2 yr molars and just finished his canines!

  • Thanks ladies - that was helpful! I guess I'll try to chill out and take them to the party! Plus, the party is early - at 10:00 - so as someone mentioned hopefully it won't be too germ-ridden.

  • I agree, I would go too. Just make sure they don't put anything in their mouth and wash their hands well before they eat and before you leave.

     Have fun! :)

  • I would take them. They are old enough now that RSV shouldn't affect them as badly as it would be under a year old. My preemie had RSV at 5 months and the only place I ever took him was to the doctor for a checkup and for shots. Pretty much, if they're going to get it, they'll get it. But with the season over, I'm sure yours will be fine. Best of luck in your decision.
