So DH is finally on board & we have decided to go for it
But isn't it overwhelming? Even with the CD board here, lots of online resources, & a visit yesterday to a baby store specialising in cloth I am still a bit confused about how/where to start. I have nothing yet but strongly leaning towards mostly prefolds with covers & some AIO's/2-in1's to pad out my stash.
What have you got so far? Are you hoping to have a big stash by the time your LO arrives or are you starting out with the bare minimum & adding to it after the birth?
Re: 1st time Cloth Diaper mommies - come in please!
I have friends that use G diapers, and they seem to like a lot. Also, I've heard good things about GroVia shells. I have heard that the G diaper shells sometimes fray when washed. You can use G diaper inserts in the GroVias...the hemp G inserts hold a lot of liquid.
I haven't bought any yet, but I think I should start soon! I also think that in the beginning we will be using disposables. I work at a daycare, so I'm pretty familiar with what diapers work well, and which don't. Seventh Generation are terrible, Earths Best are far superior! The Whole Foods generic brand work well too, but they are pretty pricey.
Thanks for posting the blog!!
I needed simple and easy.. So I went with the most popular and used BumGenius exclusively (the pockets). I felt they were so much like sposies that it would be easy for DH and also my Mom who watches DS occasionally. We also used sposies the first 2 weeks.. I didn't want them to stain, plus like ppl said its so overwhelming at first I didn't want to have to worry about that on top of a new baby.
Its easy and once you get a rhythm with washing, etc it just becomes normal. GL
I am going to be a first time mom that is planning to CD. At first, I thought it sounded like an awful idea- what do you do with all the poop! I remember reading posts on the CD board here and thinking...wow these ladies are obsessive about their diapers! Plus, all the lingo was SO confusing at first.
Now that I have been reading the board daily, scouring the internet for CD information, and read the CD FAQs I feel like I have a much better understanding of what they are all talking about. I have already purchased about 4 Lil Joeys, 3 NB covers, 2 kissaluvs fitted, 2 AIO size 1, a wetbag and some inserts. I plan to exclusively use disposables for the first week..then move into the cloth diapers once I am settled back at home and not so overwhelmed.
I think I will rotate between AIO's and fitteds with a cover. I also want to get some wool covers for nighttime.
DH and I are still debating this.
If we go with cloth, we plan to use Bumgenius 4.0. We'll use disposibles for the first week or so until the cord falls off and their poop goes back to normal. I'm still trying to figure out how gross it will be to deal with the poop one we introduce solids. The day cares we have talked to allow disposibles, but will just put them in a bag, so I'm not sure how bad it will be after they've been sitting there for hours.
There is so much information out there and a lot of it seems quite biased, so it is hard to make a decision one way or the other. It doesn't help that there are so many options with cloth, which just makes it more confusing.
I will be a first time CD momma. There are definitely A LOT of options!! I have several IRL friends who cloth diaper full time, so I have definitely been using them as a resource. It's interesting (and kind of frustrating actually!) how each momma has a completely different way of cloth diapering, with different "favorites" and such. I just want the one right answer, dangit!! (Math nerdiness coming out, maybe??)
My current plan is to start off with a small stash of several different types of diapers - prefolds and covers, bumgenius, fuzzibunz, and maybe a couple grovia. I plan on registering for them on amazon.com and hope to have a pretty good stash before the baby comes!
Depending on how it is going and if I have found what I like, I might do the Jillian's Drawers Diaper Trial to be able to cheaply try other types of diapers once baby is a couple months old (to ensure the diapers will fit).
So, that's my plan. We'll see how it goes.
Also, DH isn't completely on board yet. He says, "yeah but disposables are so much easier!!" and I continually ask him, "and how many diapers have you changed??" (The answer is 0. Ha!). I think if we start off with it right away, then that is all he will know and he'll have to figure it out! Same things goes for me with getting used to the laundry - if I start off with it right away I don't think it will be as big of a deal as it might be if we waited and I wasn't used to doing laundry every couple of days.
Wait...what's this staining poop the first few weeks that a newborn has?
Hmmm, I plan on CDing...my mom has already bought me some prefolds with covers.
I watched the video you posted on your blog last night. I'll have to visit the blog you linked in the post, too!
Infants have these black poops for the first week or so as they pass whatever they had in their system in the uterus. If I go with cloth, I plan to use disposibles during this time (it only lasts a week or so). Some people also use liners on their cloth to help save them from stains.
Here's some technical info from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meconium
I'm a first time momma that will be using CD.
I too am planning to use sposies the first couple weeks. Mostly because my laundry is in the basement and I'm worried it'll be hard for me to get up and down the stairs PP.
I'm going with BumGenius AIOs. It seems like the best fit for me. I've bought a few in size Small to start with. I'm waiting to see how it goes before investing in the larger sizes.
