3rd Trimester

PP Birth Control

I was surprised that my Dr is already asking me what we will do for BC PP... I'd rather not go back on the pill, and I'll be bfing...she suggested an IUD.  We are planning to try for #2 around 1 year (we're getting old!) and a part of me just wants to do NPF...but that worries me a bit.

What are you planning? Are you already thinking about this? Will I even have time for sex? HAHA!

Re: PP Birth Control

  • DH and I talked and we are just going to use condoms after I give birth.

  • I was planning on just using good ol' condoms in between this LO and getting pregnant with the next (hopefully 2yrs). I can't be bothered to go back on the pill for just two years and IUDs scare me - I know too many people that got pregnant while on them.

  • We'll continue to do a loose NFP as we did before.

  • I haven't really decided but will probably go back on the pill because I don't mind taking it and never had any issues with it, but DH and I are planning on getting pregnant again within six to nine months, so it will be very temporary.  I'm not trusting the whole "bf-ing is natural birth control' myth...I've known too many people that have gotten pregnant while bf-ing...in fact, I was one of those babies Smile

  • She's probably asking because too many people think that BF-ing is a form of BC. Also, because two pregnancies closer than 18 months apart increases the risk of preterm birth and complications. I know it was definitely something that was discussed with our fertility doctors this time around.

This.  I wasn't on BC for 2 years before we got our BFP, and any kind of hormonal BC makes me crazy.  I've had the Mirena IUD, and it was the worst experience of my life.

Yup. The March of Dimes even lists it as one of the increased risk factors for premature birth- I hadn't heard of it until DH went back to the fertility clinic at 3 months postpartum to discuss our second pregnancy.

  • I don't want to go back on the pill, so I am considering NFP or condoms because we are probably going to start thinking about LO #2 once this baby is about 1 year old.

  • My OB and I talked about an IUD after I had DD..I was EBF but we also knew that we would have another LO in the next year or two, so my OB told me that unless my ins would pay for the total cost (or most of it) that it wasn't cost effective to only have for a year.  I'm glad I didn't go through with it since we did get pregnant 11 months after I had DD, and the idea of an IUD kind of freaks me out.  I took the mini pill for 4 months before we started TTC again and I hated the way it made me feel and what it did to my cycles.  For the most part after DD we were just avoiding sex during certain times and just being really careful.  I got my period back when DD was 8 weeks old even with EBF, so I am prepared for that to happen this time around and it will certainly keep us on our toes!

From the MOD website, no mention of 18-months apart...

Which women are at greatest risk for premature birth?

Three groups of women are at greatest risk. These include women who have had a previous premature birth, women who are pregnant with twins or more, and women with certain abnormalities of the uterus and cervix. Treatment during pregnancy with the hormone progesterone can help reduce the risk of another premature birth in some women who have had a previous premature birth. These women should discuss with their health care provider whether this treatment is right for them.

  • I began taking the mini-pill at my 6 week post partum check up and it worked well, since I was bfing DD#1.  I will most likely do the same this time around.
  • Because Dh's getting deployed within months of LO's birth, we're just going to use condoms and NFP.  I really don't want to go back on the pill and I'll be BFing, so that limits my options anyway.  Things like the IUD aren't cost effective with DH being gone and us planning on trying for #2 when he gets back.

Certain medical conditions during pregnancy also may increase the likelihood that a woman will have preterm labor. These include:

    [...]

Short time period between pregnancies [One study found that an interval of less than 18 months between birth and the beginning of the next pregnancy increased the risk of preterm labor, though the greatest risk was with intervals shorter than 6 months (9). A woman should discuss with her provider the best pregnancy spacing for her.]

  • Not quite third tri yet but just lurking...

I think DH and I will just use condoms after the baby comes. Weirdly enough, withdrawl worked for us for 5 years and I didnt get KU till we started trying. But, I know pregnancy changes your body sometimes, and I don't want to risk it. I am BF but I don't like the pill so condoms will have to do.

  • I'm planning on getting Mirena because we're not planning to have #3 for a while.

  • Either the mini-pill or Mirena.

I didn't mind the regular pill, but methods with estrogen don't mix with breastfeeding. We don't like condoms, and I don't trust NFP-ish methods when my hormones and sleep are going to be so messed up. I kind of think anyone that goes that route better not care too much when they get knocked up again or just plans on not having sex.

  • After #1, I went back on BCP after 6 weeks.  I ended up stopping at 6 months PP b/c we decided to start TTC #2.

After #2, I got the Mirena b/c I knew it would be 2-3 years before TTC if that.

Now after #3, I'll be getting my tubes tied because we are D-O-N-E. :)

IF you plan on trying in a year, I would not recommend the Mirena.  Maybe the mini-pill and NFP?

  • I am going to get the paragard IUD because we do not want to TTC again for about 3 years and I hate taking the pill.
    DD1: May 2011
    DD2: February 2014

  • We will be using NFP again. That's what we used prior to concieving this little one. I like it a lot...but I'll definitely be conservative with it to try to avoid having another one too soon.
  • We're just going to use condoms.

  • I took the mini pill after having DD and wound up pregnant with this on when she was 9 months old, while still on it. So this time around we are going to use condoms for at least the first few months PP, then I will look into the IUD since we don't plan on having #3 for at least 3 more years.
