Cloth Diapering

BG

I recently ordered 12 BG 4.0 OS. I plan on making my own wipes, and will order some wet bags soon. What else do I need?

I hear a lot about prefolds for newborns. Are they really necessary?

I plan on ordering more BG's, but I assume I will be ok for the first month or so with 12. I will be staying home for at least six weeks, so I can wash twice a day, if needed.

TIA

Re: BG

  • We didn't cloth diaper from the beginning, so I don't have experience with that. I can say, though, that we were going through about 20 diapers a day for the first month or so. 12 diapers wouldn't have been enough at all. Also, diapers take awhile to dry. So even if you washed them twice a day, I don't think they would dry in time ti be used again right away. I also worry about how well the BG OS would fit a newborn. My LO is a very long 5 month old and he is on the second rise snap and the velcro is pretty close to overlapping. I'm pretty sure they say that 8lbs is the smallest they will fit, but I really think 10 is more likely. I think prefolds and covers would be great for a small newborn. You also could do a rental until the LO is big enough to fit into other diapers.

  • BG's didn't fit DS well until 1 month old or thereabouts, and he was 8 lbs 11 oz at birth. I would definitely suggest having something else for the newborn phase... it doesn't have to be prefolds (although they are the most cost effective option), it could be extra small pockets or AIOs, like BG AIOs, Lil Joeys, etc.

12 diapers would be very bare-bones for a newborn. I think I had around 40 prefolds and sometimes even that was pushing it. I would have some disposables on hand in case you can't get diapers clean fast enough.

  • 12 won't be enough even with washing twice a day.  You burn through diapers at lightening speed in the beginning.  Also they won't fit unless you have a ginormous baby :)  You can do disposables or prefolds/covers-depending on what your concerns are.

  • To give you a time frame: My diapers take about an hour to wash and 5 hours to dry completely on the line (though it might get better as it gets warmer outside).

I am an exception here: I think BG's can work on smaller babies.  My daughter was 7.5 lbs at birth and we had her in them as soon as her cord stump fell off (2 weeks old).  They leaked a little bit of pee  occasionally for the first few weeks--- but held the poop in just fine.  So, you can get by if your baby is a reasonable size.

  • I used 24 infant prefolds and 4 XS thirsties covers for the newborn phase (she was 6lbs 3oz)....It worked very well till about two and half months and then she grew out of them....my BG's leaked every time with pee and actually caused my husband to get so frustrated he made me stop using them until just recently....not sure if it was the fit or a repelling issue though. HTH!

  • My BG take 24 hours to dry.  I run them in the dryer for about 80-120 minutes and then still have to leave them out overnight.  No way will you get by with 12.

I also highly recommend against building your entire stash out of them before you've tried them on your baby.  I got a lot hoping the daycare would take them (they decided not to) and now I've decided that I just don't want to deal with the long dry time and issues with leakage when he's on his side.  BGs especially need pressure for the pee to soak in past the stay dry liner and if your BFing they don't get that pressure and the pee just runs out.

  • The BG's most likely will not fit for at least the first month which is why people recommend prefolds and covers. We had a small baby so we used the prefolds as well as the some xs BG fitteds and AIO's for the first 3 months though the OS started fitting when he was around 10-12 lbs. You could order some Rumparooz to try as they fit DS after a few weeks. They won't fit as long but you'd get more use out of them than a sized AIO. And Washing twice a day sounds ok in theory but they take some time to dry and it will put a lot of wear on your diapers....I'd have at least 24.
