I teach in PA and we're in the mist of a budget crises. Our governor, Tom Corbett, is proposing a bill that will significantly cut public school funding (among other things) and allow districts to furlough teachers due to economic reasons (not by senority). My district already has a major budget deficit and this would increase it by 2 million. Out of curiosity, are your schools facing major hardships like we are here in PA?
Re: Teachers
Yes we are losing a lot of staff in our district. Many people that are higher up have had their position cut all together which means they are moving back to the classroom. In my school alone we are losing 21 teachers - mind you we are already sitting at appr. 30 kids in a class as it is. Luckily we are only losing 1 counselor (where I am) so I am safe.
I told them if it had been one more year my older two would be in K and 1st grade then I wouldn't mind being fired so I could be a stay at home mom with 2 kids in school

I teach in Philadelphia, and we are all scared. Even though I have 6 years senority there are talks of bumping teachers despite seniority. The district is also thinking about eliminating full day kindergarten, art music, gym, athletic programs and so much more. Sometime this week they are introducing and early retirement program to see how many people will leave, and then they will start cutting teachers and programs.
I'm praying for all the teachers out there!
Lurker here...
I teach in one of the richest counties in the country here in the DC suburbs and we haven't had a step increase or cost of living increase in three years. Our health insurance premium has gone up in this time and they eliminated the measly $500 a year tuition reimbursement.
edit: we were also to be furloughed three days but some extra federal money got us our money back and we still had the days off!
