Bruised gums from falling?

Caroline took a pretty hard fall today, and now it looks like her gums are bruised.  She bled a little bit, but not profusely, so I didn't really think anything of it.  There was so little blood that I actually thought she just bit her tongue or something.  After a few hours, we noticed that her gums and mouth seemed swollen, and there is a little blood at her gum line, but she is acting totally normal.

I'm planning to take her to the dentist Monday to make sure everything is okay (or to an emergency dentist tomorrow if it seems worse), but I just wanted to check and see if anyone else has ever experienced this?  I did a little research and it seems like it is relatively common, but it just scared us because we've never seen that before.  TIA

Re: Bruised gums from falling?

  • Maggie cracked her tooth two weeks ago.  Well we think it is what she did.  We had an x-ray done.  In my opinion I wouldn't take her to the pedi dentist unless you have to.  Maybe your reg dentist will look at it and give you an antibiotic if she needs it.  They can't do anything about it really.  They said that I could take her and have it pulled, but it will just come out prematurely and it has already turned gray.  I don't know if Caroline banged her tooth or not, but Noah did the same thing and yep his teeth turned brownish gray too.  Also they said to keep my eye out for a bump (think that is if it becomes absessed).  Hope this helps it is a lot of info.

  • Ouchy! I don't have any first hand experience Josie.I just hope Caroline isn't in too much pain. I would probably monitor her mouth and gums and like you said take her in just to be safe.
  • Thanks Mel, thanks Kiersten.  She is acting totally normal today, though it does hurt her for me to touch her teeth and gums.  I hope her tooth doesn't become discolored, but I'm going to take her in Monday (hopefully) to get her checked out.  She is due to go to the dentist anyway, so I'll just kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

  • my son did this when he was a little over 1 yr old. it was fine and healed on its own.

we lived in nyc so i simply walked him down to the dentist, he took a quick look, said it was normal brusing, and sent me on my way.

having the dr say it was normal made me feel MUCH BETTER though bc it looked horrible!
