2nd Trimester

how many ultrasounds are you covered for?

i had asked the question below about the 12 week screening that apparently sparked some conversations about Downs.....but now i've called and checked with my insurance and i have another question if you 2nd tri girls don't mind humoring me again please :)

my insurance just said i only get one routine ultrasound, and all others can only be if there is a problem.  so i just had my ultrasound at 8 weeks....does that mean they don't cover anything else?? i can understand that now i'd just opt out of the 12 week optional one, but now i'm worried i won't get the 20 week one where you really find out if measurements, etc are ok.  i have a hard time with the idea i'd see one ultrasound at 8 weeks and then they don't ever see the baby again til it comes out of me? i'm worried.

how many ultrasounds does your insurance cover? (and does anyone have united healthcare?)

TIA!

Re: how many ultrasounds are you covered for?

  • Your 20 week one is the routine one... I dont know why you got one at 8 weeks... that one should be labeled as "special"...

You might want to talk to your doctors about it.

  • Mine covers the 20 week anatomy scan where they get the measurements and any other my doctor determines is necessary.  They covered 3 ultrasounds in the beginning due to spotting.  First one at the hospital.  A follow up where they didn't get the heartbeat.  Then a follow up again where they got the heartbeat.  I paid out for a 16 week ultrasound, because we were nervous about a previous 2nd tri loss.
  • You may only get one routine u/s but if your doctor orders any others that will probably be considered as having a "problem." I think what that means is that you can't just go and get an u/s b/c you feel like seeing your baby.

I get as my u/s as the doctor deems necessary. And yes, I have United, though all plans are different.

  • I've had 3, but the last one was a follow up to my 20 week one.  We just changed insurance and I'm not sure how many they cover.  I'm hoping 2, since the last 2 have been after our new coverage began.

From what I understand, most insurance companies will cover more than there typical number if the Dr. says that additional ones are medically necessary.  At least that's what I was told.

  • I've had 2, my 3rd is next week and I'll have another sometime in 3rd tri. They are all covered because the doctor wants them done, not because anything is wrong with the baby. I guess if he says he needs them then they pay for them. Not sure how it works for everybody else.
  • they did the 8 week u/s because it was my first appt with the OB -- i thought it was normal at first appt to have an u/s to measure heartbeat, etc? i just really hope we can get the 20 week one too (and not have to pay out of pocket if it's crazy pricey)

  • My insurance covers 1, unless they are medically necessary. I would think usually the 20 week one is medcially necessary to check for growth, abnormalities etc. That was the case with DS, we had one at 11 weeks and then the 20 week one and both were paid for. I would check with them again or perhaps your clinic/their billing dept, they could probably better tell you. good luck.

  • My insurance covers any that the doctor prescribes.  I had an 8 week and 20 week and will have a growth one at 28 cause they think he's on the bigger side.

  • I think I get 4...I had the one at 8 weeks to check for heartbeat, etc then at 12 weeks (it was literally 4 seconds so I don't know if it was even billed), and the 20 week one in 3 weeks and then one in 3rd tri.

Well, talk to your doc, hopefully it works out for you!! Good luck.

  • We got very lucky with our insurance. It has covered three already and they tell me there is not a cut off for us.
  • We've had all covered, and I've had ultrasounds at every office visit plus the 11 week NT scan and 20 week anatomy scan.  But I've only had that many ultrasounds since I'm pregnant with twins, and so the ultrasounds are all considered medically necessary.
  • I have had an ultrasound at every appointment and it has all been covered. But I am bing monitored for a thyroid issue and a cervix issue so it is necessary. I am sure my insurance loves the ever 2 week appointments :-)

  • I get one (the 20 week) plus any that my Dr. deems medically necessary.  I had one at 12 weeks to verify single PG, due to my previous c-section.  I will also probably get another one to verify cervical length, due to a LEEP I had 7 years ago. Then my 20 week anatomy scan.
  • Oh, and I have United Healthcare.
  • I had one at my first appointment at 8 weeks too, then a follow up at 13 weeks due to a cord cyst (which was deemed medically necessary and not routine) and then the 20 week. I think it depends on how they bill the insurance company? I know for my 8 week u/s, since it was billed w/ the initially office visit, it was billed seperately to determine pregnancy. The 13 week u/s was also billed seperatly b/c it was due to a possible problem. But so far no claims for the 20 week u/s (which usually I've noticed they're submitted w/in a week) so this might be billed globally with the delivery. I'd double check with your doctors office on their billing practices, check your insurance benefit certificate to see if it says anything, and maybe double check with your insurance by calling them.

  • I've had 2 so far.  1 to make sure I didn't have an EP, the second one to check the progress from the first one, and I'll get the big one too.  All have been covered.
  • As far as I know all of mine are covered.  I have had four already and am having my anatomy scan next week.  I'm sure I'll have more after that.

My doctor wants to keep checking up on me because the first time I was pregnant, my DD has brain development issues and we lost her at 23w.

  • Basically, whatever my Dr says is "necessary" my insurance covers. So I had them at 5w, 7w,8w, 9w, 12w, 18w, and will have another at 23w.. and then more at the end for biophysical profiles I think starting at 32 weeks.  I had two m/c and am on blood thinners though.. so that is why I had so many early ones. The 9, 12 and 18 are all pretty much standard for my OB office.. I asked for the 23w one because we aren't sure of the gender from my 18w.. The rest are all because of my history..
