I need some reassurance. I've been pretty rigid about the no sandwich meat thing, buy today I HAD to have an Italian sub. I got it pressed, and I microwaved it for 30 seconds. This should make of ok correct?
There are two things: listeria and nitrates. Nitrates are only a problem if you eat a ton of them, so I really haven't worried about that. Listeria are a kind of bacteria that could be carried on the meat, but heating kills them. By nuking the sub, you negated that risk.
Honestly, I've eaten at Subway several times and just had it toasted. I haven't got food poisoning, so everything is fine. This isn't a moderation thing, it's a risk management thing. Either you get sick or you don't, and the vast vast majority of people don't. The problem is that if you DO get listeriosis in pregnancy, it can kill or severely deform your baby. That's why some people choose to avoid a long list of places it could be (deli meat, soft ice cream, prewashed salad mix, sushi, etc.)
I've eaten lunch meat/deli meat many times during my pregnancy (although never two days in a row). My doc said that "life is too short to not eat deli meats". In reality, listeria can grow in ANY processed food, not just deli meats.
Re: Sub?
My friend is 20 weeks, and did the same thing... you will be fine.
Do you even understand why it's a no-no?
