mil says juice should replace formula

Today my idiot of a mil told me that you can't always give DD formula so you should give her juice.  She also thinks real food should replace it.  I tried to tell her that nothing should replace formula until after one year but she thinks she is always right.  Ugh she is just so dumb I can't stand it.  okay vent over :)

Re: mil says juice should replace formula

  • Yeah- why do MIL's do this?  Today I was told "you're giving him too much solids" since he's chubby.  DS is 22lbs at 7mos.  He gets 1 thing of yogurt and 1 jar of solids a day... and 28oz formula.   It blew her mind that formula could make him chubby.

She also then handed him a fvcking hershey kiss.  Awesome.  Just awesome.

I wish these people would realize they raised their babies- sure they did just fine, but its OUR turn now. *sigh*

  • What is it with that generation and their obsession with juice?!

Agreed. I don't plan on giving R juice for a long time. When he's one, he can have milk and water, but I don't want him to have an attachment to sugary drinks.

  • DS has had juice twice.  He had RSV & Pneumonia and for the LIFE of me I couldn't get him to drink any liquids.  I put water in a sippy, he refused.  I finally added a tiny splash of apple juice- and BINGO! It lured him into drinking at least for the day.

I will only use it on desperate occasions again.  lol  But yeah-  I'm not a juice fan. And for god sakes- at LEAST make it 100% juice.  MIL thinks that stupid orange/red drink is "juice".   They feed my niece capri suns and kool aid like its going out of style.  Makes me nuts!!!!!!!!!! lol

  • We are not doing the juice thing either. But its not all just MIL's that are stupid. My mother gave DS juice about a month ago without even asking me. I told her we will not be giving DS juice at all and all she had to say was "but he liked it" in a whiney voice. Of course he liked it its sugary!!!
  • No juice. None. Juice has been linked to childhood diabetes and obesity- kids that drink juice at a young age tend to grow up and want soda too. eeek, what is she thinking?!?!

  • Yeah, I'm not a huge juice fan.  We had to give to DS1 around 8-9 months because he was SO constipated.  It was the only thing that helped him.  He still gets one glass a day in the morning but its always been heavily watered down.  My SIL asked me last summer when I was going to stop watering down and I told her never.  I still water down MY juice.

The same way our generation is obsessed about not giving our kids juice.

Everything in moderation.  I personally see no need for juice, but it won't kill them if some land in their mouths.

  • I got flamed in another post for saying juice is not the more nutritional thing to give your kids. I get that no one is giving it to them in excess but I just don't see the need for it.

That's my pedi's office stance on it.  They say there is never a need to give your child juice.  I think it is a good thing if they are sick and that will entice them to drink more, but beyond that I don't see the advantage.

This this this this! Will you please meet me for a coffee at MIL's house! I just got the "well I gave DH juice allllll the time and he LOVED it!!" Ok, when I met him at 32 I had to wean the man off 12 cans of coke a day! The guys pee was like battery acid! What a great point and SO true!

I get the "im sure he hates his formula, it's so boring, he must want something else!"....um since he's never had it, pretty sure he's not laying in bed thinking I am cruel mother because he wants a sip of apple juice! UGH!
