Trouble TTC

Ovarian Cyst after Clomid

I took my first round of Clomid 100mg in February.  I started my period in March and went to the doctor for a pre-Clomid ultrasound to begin the second round.  She found a large ovarian cyst, and said we could not continue until I got my perdiod next month (hoping it would go away on its own).  Cyst ruptured on Monday, and doctor said period should come soon after.....still waiting.

I am wondering if I should not take Clomid and switch to something else?  Doctor said more than likely Clomid hyperstimulated me which caused cyst.

Also, question for anyone who took Clomid.......Did you ovulate from both ovaries while on the med or did you ovulate from one ovary or the other?

Re: Ovarian Cyst after Clomid

  • I'm sorry about your cyst.  I'm not sure whether or not you should continue with clomid.  Did you doctor give you any other options?  Is there a reason you couldn't go down to 50 mg of clomid?  Or did you already start with that?  Sorry, that's lots of questions!

I just took my first round of 50 mg of clomid.  Per my ultrasound today I have one follicle on my left side.  So, no, I won't ovulate from both ovaries.

  • My doctor said I should go down to 50mg, but I am still a little nervous.  My other option is injectables.

  • Hmmmm....I'm still a little new to this but if it were me I would try the lower dose of clomid.  My RE told me that injectibles will stimulate your ovaries more than clomid and your chance of multiples/hyperstimulation is much higher.  But, that's just my RE.

    Good luck with your decision!

    Mine said this too!

I have been producing follicles on both sides.

  • I also question why your RE started you on 100mg instead of 50mg. You could also ask about Femara.

  • I would ask about femera if you are more prone to cysts on clomid.  But to answer your other question, I did 50mg of clomid this cycle and had one follie on each ovary.

  • My RE said injectables are more likely to cause cysts, and often patients will have to sit every other cycle off to let the cysts resolve (like you are doing now). I don't know if cysts are more or less common with Femara, but might be something to ask about.

I started on 100 mg of Clomid, and have had 2, 4 and 1 mature follies with each round. When I've had more than one, I've had mature follies on both ovaries. I never had cysts on my baseline ultrasound.

  • I've taken Clomid and injectibles, and the injectibles definitely stimulate you more.  I would ask about Femara before switching to injectibles.  Good luck!

  • Is there a reason why they started you off with 100mg of Clomid on your first round? That seems excessive. I started with 50mg and ovulated. I would ask to go with a lesser dosage.
  • In haven't ovulated yet with clomid, but both my ovaries are creating cysts.  How did you know it ruptured?  My dr wanted me to wait to get my period (which probably won't happen) or come in again 5 weeks after they found it for another ultrasound.

  • Not sure why they started my out on 100mg.  I only have one fallopian tube due to ectopic pregnancy so maybe they wanted to stimulate my left side (side still with tube).

I know it ruptured because I had really bad lower abdomen cramps so went in for sonogram and the doctor said she saw fluid indicating it ruptured.  She said I should start my period within the next couple days (it has been a week).

My doctor also said I not ovulate from both ovaries at once, which I don't think is true.  I think I need a new RE!
