egg retrieval on saturday..

This is my first IVF cyIcle and  I am going in for my egg retrieval on saturday and I was wondering if you knowledgeable ladies had any words of wisdom? How many is a good number? Are all the eggs "good to go"? How did you feel after? Any input is good! Thanks Smile

  • Good luck!

Mine was pretty quick and painless (was a little loopy right afterwards from the anesthesia but recovered quickly).

Not sure of how many eggs is a good number. I've seen people post about 20+ eggs.  I got 6 for my first IVF, but now my RE wants me to get more for #2.

They will call you the following day with a report of how many fertilized.

  • 10-12 is average, over 20 has diminishing returns. Quality over quantity.

A "good number" is personal, so it depends on what your AFC is and how many follicles are growing. You want a good yield for what you can naturally produce, you cannot and should not compare yourself with other people on the board as you have no idea what their situation is.

20 is NOT an average number, and plenty of ladies on this board have had success with 5 or fewer eggs at ER. I advise you not to worry about numbers, you want nice, quality embryos.

  • I just had my ER on Sunday.  They got 12 eggs, and 8 fertilized w/ ICSI.  My big recommendation is drink a ton of gatorade.  I drank 64 ounces of gatorade the day of retrieval and the day after, plus water, felt really good by the 2nd day.  I was peeing constantly, but that's expected....you want to flush all of that fluid out!  GL!

  • Best of luck. We just did our first IVF in march, transfer was cancelled though b/c I triggered with Lupron and doc was worried my hormones were a little wacky from hyperstimulate. I agree it is very individual as to how many eggs is a good number and remember it only takes 1 embryo to make a baby! I felt a little bloated after retrieval, agree that you should drink gatorade/water, felt better by day 2! Overall, though it was not that bad. It was a little stressful after the procedure waiting for the results as to how many made the grade when it comes to good embryos. Remember just b/c they fertilize, and i have read that majority of eggs should at least fertilize, they won't all divide into good embryos. Just continue to think positive, as my dh always says!
  • Good Luck on Saturday!  We'll all be waiting to hear how it goes.

  • HI heather

This is my 1st IVF as well. I just got back home from my egg retrieval today. I was a little nervous because I thought  it would hurt, but after they gave me the medication IV..I didn't even feel a thing. My nurse kept telling me before the retrieval not to be nervous because it was not bad at all. Right now I just have some cramping, that kind of feel like gas. But everything thing went fine. Hope this helps.

  • so much positive energy!!! i cant wait to report back tomorrow afternoon and let you guys know how it went
