i know you arent Dr's but need some WWYD advice...

I have a terrible sore throat. It started Wed night I chalked it up to long hrs and having a toddler to chase around...figured I am just run down. Well here it is Sunday and it is KILLING me. I have no other symptoms..no fever no cough nothing. Im not congested..just hurts to swallow. I have to work a 10 hr shift tomorrow and Tuesday so I cannot make a DR apt. either day. i was thinking of running down to CVS to their "minute clinic" (which I have never done) to have a rapid strep test done...bc Im a little worried about why this is getting worse not better. Would you? or would you call your OB? Just not sure what the OB can really do or say?? (ive been drinking hot lemon tea with honey and gargling warm salt water)

  • FWIW, I've had a sore throat for a few days that is just due to drainage from allergies.  I thought I was getting sick, because it hurt so bad at first.  It may not be what you're dealing with, but I just thought I'd share that could be it.

I've gone to the Minute Clinic in a pinch, and had no problems with it.  It's great for when you need to see someone, but can't get in to your doctor.  I would say to go if you are concerned about strep.

  • It can't hurt to go to the clinic. I assume if you need to see a doctor, they'll let you know.

  • I think if you're really worried and in pain, the Minute Clinic sounds like a great idea. If it were me, I wouldn't call my OB since it doesn't really seem to be a pregnancy problem. Just let them know you're expecting wherever you go so they recommend/subscribe safe treatment, obviously :) And I second a PP. If you think it may be strep, I'd go. I believe that strep untreated can become very dangerous.

  • When I get strep it is usually just the sore throat and fatigue. I doubt your OB could do anything and would probably just send you to the clinic. Feel better.

  • I may be wrong, but I THINK the rapid strep tests are notoriously false negatives and they end up going ahead and doing the slow ones to be sure anyway.  I would probably call and try to get worked in at your regular doc and if need be, take some time off work.  They don't want you there if you're sick anymore than you want to be there if you're sick.  Ya know?  That being said, I ALWAYS get a sore throat when my immune system starts getting compromised.  So anytime I'm starting to fight off a cold, the sore throat is the first symptom I get.
  • I'd go to the minute clinic.  I went a few months ago for possible strep and they did a rapid and send away strep test.  I'd want to get on antibiotics and get better as soon as possible in case it is strep.
