Learning to crawl question

DS is getting up on all fours and starting to rock.  I'd say at least half the time, though, he crys when he is on his belly.  I assume it's a combination of the physical exertion of getting/staying up on all fours and the frustration of not being able to move forward yet.  We don't keep him on his belly when he is crying, but we do for a little bit when it's just whining.

Anyway, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else's LO did this before starting to crawl.  I don't want to torture the poor kid, but I know he will be happy when he starts crawling.

  • Emma did that too. She always hated tummy time, do before she could crawl, she'd get super frustrated and cry. It didnt take too long for her to figure it out since she didn't like being on her belly.

  • Syd, no. Sarah, oh heck yes! She's been crawling for about a week now but for the first couple days she'd cry the whole time she was crawling and she's always HATED being on her tummy. She's a bit of a drama queen if you ask me. I figure frustration leads to learning so I let her fuss a little but when it turns into a meltdown then I swoop in for the rescue.
  • I would keep doing the whine=ignore and cr;y=pick up.  Laurel did the army crawl before she figured out crawling on all fours.  And she was a "late" crawler, around 9 months.

  • Yup, he hated tummy time until he figured out how to move... and now I can't keep him on his back!  Seriously, I can't even change his diaper on his back.  It'll happen in no time.  :)

  • I actually asked the same Q in class. C gets pretty pissed when there's something just out of reach or she just wants to move but can't and will cry. Kristi said a little fussing is fine but if they start to get very frustrated they may quit trying for a while so they don't feel that frustration again. So we do the same thing, either get her what she wants or move her if she seems headed toward angry baby status.
