The other day I was at Target and picked up the Aden + Anais blankets, which run about $30 for four blankets. I think what makes them somewhat more expensive than most receiving blankets at Target is the fact that they are muslin, which is an extremely lightweight, thin fabric made of 100% cotton.
My thinking is that my baby may need swaddling in the first few months (when the weather will be warm), and all the flannel and fleece blankets that I have will not be as comfortable and cool for LO as the lighter, muslin blankets.
Anyone else buy these blankets? Anyone that used them in the past have a strong opinion on whether they are really worth the extra cost or are unnecessary? TIA
Re: Aden+Anais Muslin Blankets... Useful or Unnecessary?
i LOOOOOVE the muslin wraps! in fact....they make me not like reciving blankets. the muslin wraps are perfect for swaddling!! they are a lot bigger than a recieving blaket - so you can really get them in a good swaddle. i found that most receiving blankets are too small. they "grow out" of them fast as far as swaddling. the muslins work great to "cover the carseat" if the baby is sleeping. And here in TX where it's hecka hot during the summer they are lightweight and perfect in the stroller.
i even have the muslin sleep sacks. they are great too.
i'm a huge fan!
I am so excited about using these! I bought some one day off of babysteals and they are packed and ready to go in my hospital bag!!!
They are already, imo, much nicer than the other flannel blankets that I have! They are larger, softer and will be easier to swaddle with!
One of my best friends from high school had a baby late January, and just sent me an amazing gift of all of her favorite things and explained why she loved them so much, something she said a friend did for her (so I will have to pay it forward!).
Anyways, a 4-pack of a&a for target blankets was included. She said of everything she has tried, they are the best for swaddling because of their size, texture (they are thinner and therefore baby won't overheat), and do get softer after every wash. She said she also loves them for other uses like putting it on the floor for tummy time.
I didn't really think about getting them, but I am really glad she sent some and I am excited to try them, especially on our May babies.
LOVE THEM.
First, overheating is a SIDS risk. You'll want a thin swaddling blanket, and nothing better than something thin and LARGE.
Second, as a 'summer' baby, it's nice to have something breathable that can fold small enough to be in the diaper bag, and when you are out in the sun you can throw over the car seat or bouncer. It won't create a sweltering area for the baby as it's breathable, but can eliminate direct sunlight. Also big enough to be used as a nursing cover in a pinch. I know we aren't having true summer babies (my son was late July), but you'll still have an infant in summer!
Third, if by chance you end up with a reflux baby, It's so nice to have a blanket that is still big enough to readjust if your spit up volcano hits the blanket before you can get a burp cloth.
Fourth - big enough to double as a play mat. My mom has cats, so I never wanted to put him directly on the floor since we're allergic. Perfect barrier for dander. Also works for grass, etc.
I could go on, but for summer and late spring babies, totally worth it. I'd probably skip it for winter or fall babies, since they are mostly at sitting up/done swaddling age in the heat... but I can't go without mine
They are a must have for me because every single mom friend I have recommended them. I got a four pack of the regular (not Target) ones and will probably buy another.
I was just on another board (maybe Baby Gear) and they said there was a difference in the Target vs. regular ones...apparently the Target ones aren't as great, but I don't have personal experience with this. Just passing along what I heard!
I got some for my shower, and OH. MY. GOD. They're ridiculously soft and airy and you could see they're going to be great for summer babies (as opposed to the traditional cotton/fleece type blankets that are common.
I'd say that they're really good to have, if only because they're breathable, and just absolutely soft.
(and like my friend said, they have such great patterns that I swear, you can use them as scarves afterwards... hehe)
LOVE them! I got a 4 pack from Target about 2 months after DS was born and I wish I had gotten them sooner. They are perfect for swaddling, a light blanket in the car, covering the stroller or carseat helped him to stay asleep, and he loved when I would lay him on the floor and wave it over him like a parachute. Laughs every time.
They are probably the only receiving blanket I will use next time. I also love the Target Dwell flannel ones for a slightly heavier blanket. They are bigger and wear better than other receiving blankets.
There is no way I'm spending that much money on baby blankets. For that price, you are paying for a name more than anything. Muslin runs about $2-3 a yard at fabric stores. They'd have to be made of silk and embroidered in gold for me to fork out 30 bucks. Carters makes larger receiving blankets in a light flannel that we used with DS and they will be just fine for DD. Yes, she'll be born a month later, but around here everyone has their a/c on in the summer, so I'm not worried about her overheating in one little blanket.
