  For one day, my husband would take a day off (it's his baby too!). For a week, I'd either fly my mom in or try to split it--one day each for me, DH, other grandma, a SAHM friend (who is willing to help if needed), and another friend.   A totally useless answer if you don't have people nearby willing to help.

  A week in Jan?  Geesh - they could've picked a week that parents were likely to take vacation!!  (Like say sometime in July or Aug!).  No ideas for ya, other than family members who may be nearby.  Good luck!

  Do they follow the school district calendar?  If so, there will be several days (federal holidays and such) where there will be closures.

  My daycare is closed that day too.    I will be taking Monday and Tuesday off and making a little trip over the mts to see the grandparents.  My daycare lady also took the whole week of Christmas off PAID.  So that would mean I would end up paying someone else a full week right before Christmas if my mom did not volunteer to take the week off.  Not a good time of the year to have to pay for daycare twice.

  Ugh, I know.  I forget about the little holidays they are closed. It's written in the "contract" but they sneak up on you.  They usualy give you a reminder 2 weeks out even still it's hard. 

  I will probably just keep her with me that day.  My boss is pretty flexible.   Or we have had DH's mom come over too.  Sometimes we do the split shift.  I have her in the am while he goes to get his stuff done and then I go do what I have to do in the afternoon /evening.  This worked well last year if we both had things we had to do for the day.  But both of us have flexible schedules.  Kevyn has the flexibility, but you are a bit different.

  As for the week in January, I've put off thinking about it yet even though they gave us like 5 months notice!  lol  If DH's parents have not moved to Florida yet, I'll probably have his mom come over a few days and/or I'll take vacation.  I still have 1 week this year to take, and I'll just ask my boss if I can take it that week in Jan instead.  Steve is still owed a week too, so maybe we'll go somewhere.

   It's a friday, the whole following week and monday they are gone right?

   I have a co-worker that said she has a back up sitter, and if I ever needed it in a pinch to let her know and her friend would be happy to have another child for the day.   I haven't had to yet though.

  After working in retail for so many years, and Christmas week being SUPER busy in retail.  (And it's DH"s busiest week of the year too) we'd be screwed in the past if they took off the week of Christmas!

  We find 1-2 families to pair up with and I watch their kids for 1-2 days and they watch mine, we basically get out a calender and BEG family and friends that have the days off to swap kids on other days or just watch my little guy and during school vacations I find a highschooler and pay double if no one else is available... oooooh fun childcare closures....

  Your provider should give you a list of closures well in advance.  We get one for the calendar year.  I can't believe they just told you about Veteran's Day??  DH and I are typically off work the same days our daycare is closed but we are lucky in that we work in schools.  But if we had to, one of us would take a day off, or we would ask my mom to watch DS.  But we would know well in advance and could plan.
