Health & Exercise

Arm exercises??

While I was at my Dr a week ago they told me no weights at all.  I'm in my sisters wedding in July with a strapless dress.  I lost 50 lbs before I found out I was pregnant and I'd really like to make sure my arms at least look toned.  I'm still running a few times a week.  But I've slowed way down because my heart rate can't go over 140 or something. Trying to keep that in check is such a pain!

Thanks so much!

Re: Arm exercises??

  • Is there a health reason you are specifically not allowed to use weights??  I would question it, much research has shown the benefits of continuing regular exercise... Monitoring your heart-rate has even been thrown out the window in most new research... I continued to run my entire pregnancy, and never monitored my HR, just don't over-do it is the advice my doctor gave me.  And as for weights, I still use my free weights everyday ranging from 5- 12 pounds.  I'm not ur doctor, so like I said, there may be a specific health reason you are being told "no" but if there's not I don't understand why a doctor would ever tell you "not" to continue exercise as usual with only "some" modifications.

  • Hi Jayme! Unless you have any specific medical reasons I don't see why you couldn't do arm toning exercises. I had a DVD, The Perfect Pregnancy Workout and she used free weights and also did chair dips to work the arms. As far as your heart rate, I agree, that's old research that some doctors still stick with but it's outdated. It's better to go by rate of perceived exertion to make sure you're not overdoing it. I talked to two doctors about it and that was their advice. I also recommend the book Exercising Through Your Pregnancy. It's not an exercise guide, it's more about exercise and its effect on you while you're pregnant. I ran throughout my pregnancy and I'm not a super hardcore runner or anything so PM me if you want to chat. I'm also hoping to start running with Aline again soon, you should join us :)

  • Thank you!  I've had a burst of energy this weekend so I'm heading back to the gym tomorrow.

I would love to run with you girls, but I live up in Nor Cal now! My hubs job transferred us up here in Sept '09.

Thank you for the rec on that book, I will definitely check it out.  I'm not sure why they said I couldn't do weights, but I am going to try things out and see how I feel.  Just not overdo it.

  • Oops, I thought you might have moved but then I remembered you still on the local boards :) Good luck with everything!

  • In my opinion your doctor is too conservative and seems somewhat old school.  Weights are fine, but you should just cut down on the weight -- go for less weight more reps.  I don't think the heart rate information you were given is accurate either -- too conservative.
