Diaper rash meds

Hi! My son has a diaper rash and the purple desitin doesn't seem to be working. Any one have a different product that works better. TIA, Amy

Re: Diaper rash meds

  • We use A&D ointment. DS has never had a bad rash, but anytime his bum starts to look red I put it on. I have also started using it every night since he has started sleeping a 4-6 hour stretch.

  • We use the CVS brand cream. It has 40% zinc and most of the others have around 15%. It was the only thing that clears up his diaper rash.

  • When Luke had the diaper rash from hell our diaper changing routine went like this:  wipe with a warm wash rag (not wipes), dry bum completely with hair dryer, cover bum with lotrimin, and then cover with aquaphor.  It took like 5 minutes or more to change a diaper, but it worked.

We also mixed baking soda with his bath water once he could stand to sit in the tub.

  • Do you know what is causing the diaper rash?  I ask because after months of trying to figure out DD's diaper rash/chemical burns origin, it turned out to be her formula. Just to give you an idea we tried: Lotramin, Dr Smiths, Desitin, Aquaphor, Vaseline, Bordeauxs, California Baby, baking soda baths, wash cloth wipes, hair dryer, and even a prescription diaper cream.  If you are sure it's just a diaper rash then the purple Desitin should work (it's some the stronger over the counter stuff).  Since it isn't working, it could be a yeast rash which means that Lotramin might work better and you'll want to keep the area really dry.  So a hair dryer on cool to the area, at every change, might help as well.

What seemed to work best for us, and what I still use at night, was bag balm and destin over that.  You can find the bag balm in a square green tin at CVS in the lotion section (it is used on cow's utters to keep them from chapping and cracking, I know, weird).  I would layer it on pretty thick and then put another thin layer of destin over that.

You can definitely try the wash rag with warm water and then blow dray on cool.  That will help dry the area completely.  I found that sensitive wipes worked decently as well and they were so much more convenient than the wash rags.

  • Our boys had very sensitive skin.  We'd do something similar to Froggianna.  Wash with a cloth & warm water, let it dry completely (we'd use a blow dryer too), and our doc rec'ed Boudreaux's butt paste.  When it was really awful, we used a prescription cream that was a mixture of 4 medicines, including a pain killer.  Poor baby bottoms.  :(   Hope it clears up quickly.

I agree with this.  We use Boudreaux's and also make sure DD's areas are patted dry before we put her diaper on.

We use this but we also had to stop using regular wipes and switch to organic chemical free wipes from babies r us...our dr also said if we did use regular wipes to soak them in water to rinse out all the chemicals. This made a big difference!

  • This sounds crazy but when I didn't have Lotrimin I used Triple Nipple Cream. It has antifungal, antibiotic and pain medicine. It works!
