The Melting Pot and alcohol

Okay so I dunno how many of you have ever been to the restaurant called The Melting Pot, but while expensive, it's sooooooo good....(meltingpot.com <--link for those who don't know what I'm talking about)

The only thing is most of the fondu (cheese, cooking, and dessert) have alcohol added to them... Do y'all think that all the alcohol is burned off enough to eat it while being preggers? Trying to plan a romantic night out, but don't want to do anything bad for baby...Thoughts, comments, snide remarks? Big Smile

  • I'd eat it.

But I ate my Irish Car Bomb cupcakes that had beer in the batter, scotch in the filling, and irish cream in the icing. It's not enough to add up to even one serving of alcohol.

  • That is where we had our anniversary dinner and I was pregnant at the time. I would say that it would be fine and most of it would be boiled out.

  • I drank a whole beer with dinner last night...I think you will be fine!  It was delicious, BTW :)  I just wouldn't suggest sharing a bottle of wine with DH on a romantic night out.

  • I went a few days ago, I'm 36 weeks and all is fine. I really wouldn't worry about it.
  • Do they let children eat there? Do they card you at the door? Do they card you when you order? If the answer is yes, no, no then by law they can't have alcohol that isnt burned off in their food.

  • It burns off. I'm going there on Tuesday for Girls Night Out!

    Can't wait.

However, eating there always makes me want to get a pretty cocktail. I suppose I will have to refrain. Maybe I'll have them whip me up a virgin something or other... At least I get the pretty, even if I don't get the buzz.

  • I think the alcohol would be silly to worry about... the fondu is usually extremely hot or boiling but I would definitely be EXTREMELY careful handling the raw meat!!! I got serious salmonella poisoning from the melting pot because of exposure to raw chicken. (its hard to keep track of where it has touched or what utensil it has touched... ect....)

    yummy though!!

  • MH and I ate there on Valentine's Day.  I was amazingly delicious and I didn't give a 2nd thought to the alcohol in their dishes.

  • It's completely safe.  They wouldn't let kids eat it if it wasn't.

  • Um, no you shouldn't worry about it.  Of course, I drink the occasional glass of wine whle pregnant, so clearly I don't worry about small amounts of alcohol.

  • Eat it! Most will burn off and it's not like you are going every day and drinking vats of beer spiked cheeses ;) I just drank a full glass of red wine yesterday! Enjoy!!
  • Anything cooked with alcohol is safe.  Whatever cooking process is used evaporates off much, if not all, of the alcohol content.

I've been wanting to go to our local Melting Pot we just haven't had the time, money to eat out, or a sitter.

  • Went there for v-day with DH as that is our usual spot for celebrating. Eat away! As a PP said, they wouldn't serve it to children if there was a risk of the alcohol not being cooked away.

  • For what it's worth, we called our local Melting Pot (in AZ) to ask if all the cheeses they used in the fondues were pasteurized.  The manager there told us several were not.

  • A little bit of googling brought up this:

A study conducted by the US Department of Agriculture?s Nutrient Data Laboratory calculated the percentage of alcohol remaining in a dish based on various cooking methods. The results are as follows:

Preparation Method Percent of Alcohol Retained
alcohol added to boiling liquid & removed from heat 85%
    alcohol flamed 75%
    no heat, stored overnight 70%
baked, 25 minutes, alcohol not stirred into mixture 45%
    baked/simmered, alcohol stirred into mixture:
    • 15 minutes
    40%
    • 30 minutes
    35%
    • 1 hour
    25%
    • 1.5 hours
    20%
    • 2 hours
    10%
    • 2.5 hours
    5%

That being said, the actual amount of alcohol put in to begin with is usually minimal (for a fondue, I'd guess about a quarter of a cup).  If you're eating a fondue, it's simmering continuously. So I'd figure based on how long dinner takes, you're probably in the 35% - 45% retention range. 45% of 1/ 4 cup of alcohol is approximately equivalent to a single shot.
