VBAC

Will I be able to do it?

I had to have a scheduled c-section for my first baby and have never felt a contraction. This pregnancy everything has been great and I'm planning to have a VBAC without medication. I'm nervous I'm not going to be able to handle the pain or that something will go terribly wrong.

Re: Will I be able to do it?

  • If it helps, I went through 44 hours of pitocin/foley bulb/misoprostil/broken water contractions before I caved to the epidural.  It can totally be done with the right mindset and preparation, but in the end, I wasn't at all ashamed for them to stick that needle in my back so I could sleep :)

I'm hoping for my VBAC in November, and again I'll be staying away from the hospital and all their drugs for as long as I can!

  • I went in for an induction with #1, and he moved into an unfavorable position before I ever felt more than a strong braxton hicks contraction.  I had a 15 hour labor (total) and got to the hospital at 9 cms and pushed for 2 1/2 hours with my VBAC, and never had a drop of pain medication, and I'd happily do it the same way again (well, I'd shorten the pushing if I could...).  I totally understand your nervousness - I wasn't sure I'd get through without medication before I went into labor, but just because you don't have any experience with labor as of yet, doesn't mean that you won't be able to do it!  You can do it!!  I hope your VBAC is everything you're looking for!!

  • The natural birth board has a lot of posts about managing pain, so check that board out as well as the VBAC board.  If you don't mind me asking, why was your first baby a scheduled c-section?  Was s/he breech?  I had an induction at 41 weeks and my OB called for a c-section less than 12 hours in...for failure to progress.  Another OB has since told me he thinks it was a convenience c-section (done at 6PM) so the doc didn't have to come back in the middle of the night.  I think my body/baby just weren't ready.  I am also hoping to have an unmedicated experience this time.

GL and welcome to the board!

I don't have anything to add since I'm nowhere near being ready for a 2nd yet.  I just had to say though, I'd be absolutely furious if my doctor didn't want to be bothered coming back in the middle of the night, so I got a c/section.  I was labelled FTP after 30 hours with my water broken, only 4 centimeters dilated, and a fever.

    OP, GL to you!!
