*UPDATE* My baby girl may have NEC

Just when we thought the girls were getting stronger and healthier the doctor tell us Addisyn's platelets are low and this may be a sign of NEC. The doctor doesn't seem too concerned about it but from what I've read it's quite serious. I'm so scared for my baby girl. Has anyone's baby had NEC? Did they have to have surgery? How are they now? Did they have any long lasting effects?

Thank you so much!

They x-rayed Addie and she definitely has NEC. She's on major antibiotics since yesterday had 1 platelet transfusion yesterday and 2 so far today but the doctors think she'll need more tonight. They are x-raying her every hour to hour and a half but so far nothing has changed. The docs think they caught it early but I'm so scared she'll have to have another surgery. The chances of making it out of this surgery are 10-15%. My poor baby girl has been miserable all day. Crying

Re: *UPDATE* My baby girl may have NEC

  • I just replied to your other post before I saw this one.  I'm sorry Addisyn is sick, and I hope it turns out not to be NEC. Yes, NEC is scary - don't google!  It unfortunately has a huge range of how serious it can be, and no one knows what causes it.  My son had a "NEC scare" meaning they never officially diagonsed it but he was showing symptoms of it.  They either caught it very, very early or he didn't have it.  In any case, a week of antibiotics was all he needed.  Other kids get very sick, some need surgery, and unfortunately some don't make it.  It just depends on how quickly it progresses, how strong they are, if they can operate, etc. etc. etc.

I'm guessing the doctors will watch her very closely for awhile.  Probably get lots of xrays (my son was getting them every few hours in the beginning), stop feeds, and put her on some serious antibiotics.  Keep us posted - I'll be thinking of her and hoping for a smooth recovery.

  • We just dealt with a NEC scare. Ours was also caught extremely early. Of course I too wonder if it was something else or truly NEC. Our little one is still getting over whatever it was, but he's much, much better this week.

  • I replied with info about my DD NEC. I replied in the post made to you titles*IWILLALWAYSLOVEYOU* anyway I want to be honest and say NEC is scary but they caught yours early so hopefully things will only get better from here. I hope the NICU/Micro rollercoaster is smoother from here on out you have already had a loss unimaginable to me and I am sorry. i know micro are "famous" for having a "honeymoon"period, where they many times do fantastic and unbelievably well for the first week then can have a crash down in health. I wish y'all a long "honeymoon" all the on out of the NICU.
