Postpartum Depression

How do I know when I'm done with meds?

I started taking Zoloft shortly after my 6 week check up. A month later I went back so the doc could see how I was handling it.  At that time she told me if I was feeling more myself in the spring I could self-wean, but not before then since winter adds to PPD for some people.

I feel like the doc should maybe see me again rather than me self weaning, but I don't know. I was surprised that she had basically told me to go for it whenever I wanted to once spring hit. Does everyone get evaluated before they stop or has anyone else tapered themselves?

I'm ready to taper off because I feel ok and don't want to take meds longer than I have to - but I'm scared to stop.  To have the withdrawal side effects and then have to restart would be a pain!

  • I was also wondering this. I would like to start weaning off because I wake up every morning shaking like crazy as a side effect to my meds but I'm scared to get off of them. My OB said I can stay on them as long as I need but I don't want to be on them forever.

I would talk to you OB but if weaned properly you shouldn't have any ill withdrawal side effects.  I did a self withdrawal from Lexapro & did fine.  I just googled it & took some of the tips from there & it worked for me. I didn't talk to my doc & should have because I've just gone back on them since being off since September.

  • I'd say as long as you don't feel like killing your kid or yourself anymore then you could probably go off of them.  I'll be on mine for awhile and I'm totally okay with that.  You should definitely be under doctor's supervision when coming off of anti-depressants, though.  They are not something to mess around wiith.

  • I chose to go off of depression/anxiety meds (not for PPD) almost a year ago, now. I wasn't a fan of taking medication, just personal preference. When I had begun medication they had me stagger my dosage, where it began smaller and gradually went up to the dosage I remained at. When I went off my medication I did the same, but in reverse. By cutting down slowly it kept ALL side effects (nausea, dizziness, etc.) away that I had experienced in the past after having forgotten a couple of dosages. I would definitely consult your doctor to try and figure out the best method that would work for you, and maybe work on a self maintenance sort of plan for after the fact to make sure you don't revert back to needing medication again (exercise or whatever may work for you).

Just my thoughts, but I do hope whatever you do works for you!! GL
