FSA rejecting NT Scan claim

I paid for my NT scan with my FSA debit card, and in the FSA system, they denied the claim and asked for either 1) a detailed receipt with services provided and the exact amount or 2) EOB from your insurance showing services provided and amount.

I uploaded the receipt I got from Austin Perinatal when I was checking out. It had the services provided marked on the form and the total amount written on the bottom right. The claim was still denied.

I was looking at my EOBs from the insurance site, and the one for all these services is split up - the lab where the bloodwork was sent and Austin Perinatal. But when I add up the "Amount you may owe the provider", it came up $12 short of the total they charged.

So who do I need to go yell at? Austin Perinatal? Insurance? Or FSA card?

Re: FSA rejecting NT Scan claim

  • Send the EOB to FSA, they should approve the "the amount you may oew." Sounds like Austin Perinatal owes you $12. You will have to send those $12 back to FSA or send them a receipt for something you paid out of your pocket that equals $12.

  • Ok. I'm wondering if I will get the same pushback for when I go for the anatomy scan in a couple weeks also at Austin Perinatal. I think I will call them in advance to see how much they will be charging and to ask about the amount they charged for the NT scan.

I thought FSAs were supposed to be helpful! :-P

  • What I tend to do when I haven't met my deductible yet is wait until the insurance actually goes through before paying for the visit. When you pay upfront Austin Perinatal is estimating what your insurance will pay and they don't always get it right.
  • dumb question: can you ask to pay your bill after insurance goes through? i'm in the habit of when they say, your visit today will be $xx, to just pull out whatever form of payment i have.
