Single Umbilical Artery/Hydronephrosis/Hyperechoic Bowel?

Hi ladies, long-time retired veteran of the bump and now I'm back and 17 weeks pg. Had my 2nd U/S yesterday and they found all of the above. I was wondering if any of you were given the same diagnosis during your pregnancy and what the results were. We are trying to gain more information and our heads are spinning from all this bad news. Thanks very much in advance...

Re: Single Umbilical Artery/Hydronephrosis/Hyperechoic Bowel?

  • Hi! We had a single umbilical artery, diagnosed at our 20week scan. And I have a very healthy, very active little 15 month old now! So all turned out well.

I was also traumatized when they told me...my doc obviously had to go over all possible outcomes, and he mentioned IUGR, etc. So I had to go for regular u/s growth scans and stress tests at the end, plus a couple echocardiograms. But again, she arrived perfectly healthy.

It's scary to hear that something is not quite normal--I can sympathize with you!

  • We had a very complicated twin pregnancy and fetal demise of twin A. Both twin A and B had a SUA. My Baby B was born healthy with a few anomolies; hypospadius and craniosynostosis. Both of which were repaired with surgery.

For us, there was definitely concern with the bowel and heart due to the two vessel cord. We had a fetal echo and regular stress tests to carefully monitor IUGR.

It is really scary to read about all the possible complications that can go along with an SUA. Been there. Just remember, the vast majority of the babies with 2 vessel cords, are healthy and thriving. Just like mine.
