Young teenager babysitting rate?

Hi all!

Hope you are doing well. I never get time to even lurk on the board nowadays, but anyway...

We're hiring a younger (14yo) sitter tomorrow. Very capable, mom is down the street. What is the going rate for a sitter in that situation? I'm just thinking I don't need to pay $10/hour for a 14yo but I don't want to be stingy.

TIA.

Re: Young teenager babysitting rate?

  • I have no idea what's "fair", but our sitter is in the same situation (VERY responsible neighbor girl, just turned 15). We have always paid her what comes out to probably $6-8 per hour. The first time we used her we asked her how much she charged and she didn't have an answer - she had only watched her siblings and relatives before. So, we just give her what we think is fair, and usually we just round to something even to cover the evening, typically a multiple of $10 or $5 depending on what we have on us. We live in Indianapolis, FWIW.

  • We live in MI and pay our 15 year old babysitter $7.40 (minimum wage).  I didn't know what was fair and when looking at Child Labor Laws, wage reporting requirements, etc. I decided on that figure, which I've since learned is more than fair for the COL in our area.

  • My 16 yr old niece lives around the corner and sits for us. I pay her $8/hour. I also pay her hs friend $8/hr.
