Intestinal Immaturity?????

DD is a total wonder.  She has baffled our pediatrician and has now stumped the Chief GI at Children's.  One possible diagnosis they are mulling over is Intestinal Immaturity.  I know I am grasping at straws but has anyone had this with DC.  Her symptoms are extreme ab/stomach pain with her nightly bottle sometimes with the prior bottle but mainly at night.  it lasts about 2 hours and we go through intermittent crying.  I rock/bounce/walk her until this has ended and then she is down in her crib and sleeps through the night albeit really restless.

  • I'm absolutely no help, but I want to give big, big hugs to both you and that sweet girl.
  • Thanks guys!  It is weird how this has just become a norm in our house.  I would love to be able to go on a date with DH and take a night off but it just is not in the cards even though I REALLY need it.  I had hoped that yesterday there would be a magic answer but all we have are more questions.  Hopefully the round of testing she is about to undergo will reveal a solution, if not, I am taking stock in Prosecco!

  • My niece went through something similar She had to have special prescription formula otherwise she couldn't digest it (no BF as she couldn't handle that either). She is 6 now and still needs to watch what she eats or she has difficulty digesting or having BMs. Otherwise she is a healthy, happy little girl. Their doctor thinks she might have to watch what she eats the rest of her life. Hope you don't have the same issues. GL!

Yikes!!  We have tried all the specialty formulas all the way to Neocate and nothing helped, in fact it made it worse.  Another reason why this is so boggling.  Your poor niece.  I am hoping for something she grows out of soon or is reparable.  I cannot imagine a life long digestion issue.  :(

  • I should put you in touch with a friend of mine. Her little girl had all sorts of tummy issues that no one could figure out. She has done better off of dairy and soy though. Or at least dairy. And she also did a lot of this therapy to help with an overall muscle tightness that was probably affecting her ability to eat and swallow. He had torticollis and her rib cage was also sort of up high from her muscles being tight. Anyway the food changes and this special therapy helped a lot. And just growing and growing out of it. If you want to talk with her and see if she has any doc recommendations (she saw everYone around and was really frustrated with some of them) let me know. I hope things get better for her. It has to be hard watching your baby be so sad.

jill I would love to speak/email her and pick her brain a bit.  I am actually really tempted to go the chinese medicine approach and try acupuncture.

Thank you. They have learned to adjust and there is still hope she could outgrow it. She was born a little premature so they think that had something to do with it and then it took awhile to diagnose so things got pretty bad for awhile. But, after they figured it out, she adjusted well. It's like someone with celiac disease or diabetes, just know what doesn't digest well and avoid it. Hope your little girl outgrows her issue!

  • How old is LO?  When DD1 was 3-4 weeks old, she started night time screaming fits - her longest lasted for 8 hours.  Then came explosive frothy stools, green colored, and blood streaks in stool.  After eliminating ALL forms of dairy and soy from my diet, her extreme gas pains subsided.  It took about 3 weeks for everything to get out of her system and the blood started to go away too.  I ended up being dairy and soy free (including casein and whey) for 11 months.  When we started supplementing she could tolerate SImilac Ailumtum (sp?).  She can tolerate all dairy and soy now.

Our pedi said that her digestive system was not as mature as most other babies. The way they got to the soy/dairy thing was through testing her stool samples for sugar levels.

While BFing - if I even had a tinsy bit of soy or dairy (and so many oils used have soy) - she would have extreme gas.
